Finally launched the Excalibur

After buying the boat twenty seven months ago, it made its way home a couple of weeks ago. We launched it into our cove last week and confirmed that the slipway is too short and there isn't nearly enough water so it was drive the boat off the trailer, shut down and drag the boat with lines to the end of the pontoon around the other moored boats

Eventually got it going and had a pretty good run. Came back into the end berth and it didn't want to tickover at all. Dragged it back down to the slipway where it was very happy to start right up and so I could power back onto the trailer.

Got it home and it ran beautifully on the hose!

I hadn't realised the boat had a happy face. Must have liked being back on the trailer.

Thanks. Don't think I'll be using that slipway again. Although it's convenient (about a minute from my house), it was pretty awful.

67. something at about 4,700 revs with four aboard and full fuel. There's a 5,200 rpm chip in the MSD so if it pulls the revs it should run about 74 or so. I don't think it is the most efficient of hulls as the slip seems to be on the high side.

Got the diagnosis today. Lower part of the block (around the main bearings) is trashed. Bye bye Excalibur.

Unfortunately, no. The figures I have been quoted to build an equivalent engine or even repower with a standard type long or short block just don't justify the expenditure on a 30 year old boat that really isn't worth very much.

Sadly, I love the looks (I can sit quietly and happily gaze at it) and sound of the boat (when it ran). Sort of feel like I've been kicked in the stomach today. Nice garden ornament perhaps.

Here's what was found on the mesh screen to the oil pump.

Yep i know how you feel there Ben. I had same thing happen blew the engine, boat sat on drive breaking my heart just looking at it, knowing i cant use it or afford to fix (Mrs wanted new bathroom instead Bitch) In the end i began to resent that boat, so sold it and am looking out for another, that way it cheers me up giving me a bit of hope there will be another boat sitting there looking at me that i will be able to use.

Dont give up on it, its got to be worth getting another block. Think of all the time and money already spent. And its such a lovely looking boat, what would you get in its place?

Thanks for the encouragement Carl (and Chaos).

The engine is going to an engine builder to see what is salvageable. Most of the internals bar the stroker crank should be OK as well as all the ancillaries. The engine has all the right stuff internally and externally and I guess maybe I'm not ready to give up just yet.

Thanks again guys.

Update

The engine has been with Express Racing in Florida and they have just sent me the dyno sheet.

Pretty flat torque curve. Should be getting it back in the next few weeks or so.

Yep, looking forward to getting the thing back together and up and running.

I figure it should be ready just in time to test it once and then put it away for the winter!

(Fortunately, we have a pretty short winter here)

It's been a while but the Express built engine is now in the boat.

The fellow doing the rigging has had the boat out for a test run and found a few areas that need attention:

No heat building in engine - The water is still cold but he will install a thermostat.

Low water pressure - Different impeller should solve this.

There is the worry that when the engine is warm that starting will be difficult due to the advanced timing. A switch will be installed that retards the timing for hot starts.

The worst thing is that a transmission seal is leaking. The problem is that the engine has to come out to repair it!

Here's what it looks like. Sorry about the dirty fingerprints on the headers.

Don't know but Bruce at Express has specified a min water pressure of 15 psi and it is nowhere near that. The good thing is that the rigger and engine builder are (and have been) liaising and I'm sure it will be sorted.

Just stick restrictors in the exhaust water outlet to bump up water pressure, i would not run a thermostat !
This is what most riggers do and it works, on a threated outlet port use a SS washer and weld it on the fitting inside. on a pipe outlet just squeze it together to restrict waterflow.
you want the pressure to be build up in the exhaust or you can get air pockets !

Also, NICE BOAT and on the high slip #..it will safe the tranny on a TRS boat..14-18 % slip is a good number for a transmission boat.
