For Black-Tornado

Here's a bit of video you may like.

Sadly, the quality is absolutely ghastly!..... kind'a like a 30th generation blue movie copy!...but hey, it's cool too.

It's 50 odd meg, so be patient.

Quality of film ghastly, quality of content certainly not!

Scarey moments and serious guts - now those races were in touch with the public - literary. Just shows how all are our attitudes have changed to safety - it scares the pants off you just thinking about the potential consequences - but thats now bred into us. The Ruddy Nanny State!
As for the race crews - did they care about themselves - I dont think so - it was winning that mattered.. take a wave... pile in.... throttle back, throttle up.....pile in again and then back on the juice.
Cant see those "Cat boys" dong or standing for that!!!

Wow!!! Where did you dig that out from?? Absolutely wonderful!!! I particularly liked the commentator remarking that boat No. 9 Aerial Marine IX was first at Torquay, followed by Black Tornardo!!!!!

And if Ken Cassir has any back problems these days it's probably from the waves that Yellowdrama encountered at 3 mins 33 secs into the clip. How high did that Enfield hull go?!

I have in my posession a 4 hour long VHS tape, which I believe is the property of Ray Bullman. It's the CTC TV coverage from 1962 through to the early eighties. (with a few years missing)

Most of the video is as bad, if not worse, than the ghastly bit i've posted, but it's content is great.
Much of the early stuff is hazy, contrast-less B&W.

Interviews with loads of yesteryear racers etc. narrated by various fellas, including Raymond Baxter, who I believe is was a keen fan.

I remember that year well, That was a points drive for Bobby Rautboard in FINO very calculated for a finish if ever I see one.

Anyone got any pics of (I think) 'Magnum Tornado'?

It sank during one of the Cowes Torquay races, was recovered, and eventually turned into a cruiser by Ian Toll. (Brother of Tony Toll, ex Steve Bourne navigator)

I know 'White Tornado' sank in a CTC aswell, but think this was a different boat.

The "Tornado"(white) Magnum 28' of Vincenzo Balestrieri sank during the CTC in 1968.
Then Ian Toll asked to the "official" owner Don Pruett to buy the wreck.
Some mounths after the Royal Navy that was in searching of a helicopter sunk around, found the wreck of "Tornado" end recovered and gave it to the new legitimate owner Ian Toll that raced with it in CTC 1969.
I don't know if Toll left the old name "Tornado" or changed it.
In the same year Balestrieri run the CTC in a new Bertram 31' "White Tornado".

Cool, thanks!

Ian lengthened, widened, and fitted a cabin deck to the boat. I last saw it in about 1991. it had also had Lancing Marine surface drives fitted.

I'll see if I can get any pictures of it before/after the work.
