all good so far........ trim tabs working, fuel pump live, turning on the key, trim pump running, all lines run, selecting gear and getting full throttle just need to tidy up a few things them she's ready to rock and roll!! when you launching this one?

Hi John, yeah like the captain said its balsa. Pretty light, figure it weighs about 130kg so far, hull minus structures.

nice one alan looks good, whats the idea of the end grain balsa? i know its harder to crush but over lenght is end grain not very brittle??

Conor, the balsa, or any core really only adds thickness and stiffness to a panel without the associated weight of a solid glass panel. As both skins flex the core comes under compression, balsa on its end grain doesn't compress. The core is not a structural member on its own it just resists the forces the two skins put on it.
Captain, yeah it is pretty light.
Gel, 300 skin, 300 chop/450 biax, 600chop to bed the core, 300chop and a 450 biax.
Yeah, didnt use bonding paste on the core, just bagged the cores into wet glass.
Transom and stringers shouldn't ad up to more than 30kg, seat bases and tabbing probably another 20'ish!
Do a lightweight deck and hoping to come in under 240kg but not sure now after allowing for side impact reinforcement.
We'll see...

Why use balsa, u can build a much lighter and even stronger hull with divenycell?
(H100 for exampel).
And if u want more lightweight boat, use carbon/ epoxy 
|
