Just a wild guess but are this thread & the 'Ideal boat' thread related?
Smaller boats (14' - 16') can have advantages such as economy, ease of use/storage but I find the biggest disadvantage with mine is the lack of space for storing all the 'crap' (I can't spell paraphernalia!) that you need to carry, especially if you're skiing.
Problem is; building all this storage into a boat is time consuming & is therefore going to bump up the price. Not every customer is going to want to pay more for stuff they might not use.
So... How about a basic boat with a standard (empty) interior. Then an options list with a series of user-fit bolt-in custom mouldings.
i.e.
Ski-locker c/w with lid.
Under engine-well storage 'pod'.
Under-bow storage 'pod'.
Side bins.
Bolt-in through-deck lockers/wet boxes.
'Deluxe' dashboard with waterproof glovebox/GPS/Radio/CD etc.
You get the idea. If the basic hull/deck was designed accordingly, customers could buy a basic boat & then bolt in whatever they chose from the optional mouldings & customise the interior to their exact needs.

Ors,
I agree with what your saying but I would add the following:
I read somewhere ages ago that if you offer a basic boat effectively for home completion you end up with a lot of boats with your name on them, all completed to differing standards.
Depending on how good the work is, your range of boats can end up with a bad reputation through no fault of your own.
If Gav were to go down the route of a basic boat with an extensive options list, I would suggest he makes them factory fit options. IMHO of course.
You just have to make sure that if someone specs a top level boat it don't end up at BMW type money.
Having said that, BMW sell plenty of motors, so make the Seaquel 16 expensive to buy and go for the quality / status / I want something different, end of the market.
What are your thoughts Gav, where are you thinking of pitching it.
Speed, Luxury, Family, all three?

That's a fair point. I think you're probably right.

Agreed, the Seaquel 500xl(as its going to be called) will be factory built with factory fitted extras.
it will be pitched mid market to compete on par with american built boats.
and Quality will be pucka!

If you'd export it to France you'd better stay just under 5 meters ; less security gear to buy here.

The security gear (life vests, oars....) is at each country's discretion.

That looks nice. Kinda like a smaller version of the bigger boat; rather than a bigger version of the smaller boat.
Too much bow though, both aesthetically & practically.
This Seaquel 500 thing is looking very promising.

Actually here's how I'd see it:
Lenght : 4.99 M
Beam as 14 1.7M
Deadrise 20 ° at transom
Max Motor 90-130 HP
Weight 300 kgs
