Yes, right from the grass roots in Sttingbourne:

"Hello Jon.
No, not original 153. This was the 1st 16 that Steve built (after all that tank testing in the water wheel. He raced it a few times but the gel-coat cracked up so he went back to the drawing board and sorted the gel/ lay up out.
He sold the boat to Bill Goldsmith, who was a Sittingbourne greengrocer mate of Steve's dad. We used it as a ski boat with a 125 Merc for a few years, don't know what happened to it. I raced a Fletcher 15 (navigated by Geoff Purves) for a year (there weren't enough Phantom 16s to be homologated). Next year, 1972 I think, we lied our way into Class4 with a purple 16 droop snoot called Shaft, fitted with a short shaft 100. I stuffed it on the first race and I think Steve realised that some drivers (most in fact) weren't up to the slightly wayward behaviour down wind and raised the deck line. Boat was really great and we had a number of wins and went on to win the championship. I was navigating in Class 3 for sundry barmy bastards, it was all BP 125 Mercs and 115 GT Johnsons on crappy boats. My regular ride was with Tony Knight and he commissioned the first 23 and got me to crew. That boat was beautiful but Tony liked inboards so got Weslake to do a 3.5 litre V8 Rover. Made a wonderful noise and really looked the part but it was heavy, underpowered and unreliable. Only went well in the rough but usually ended up with electrical problems, like a con-rod knocking the alternator off half way back from Calais. I designed a drop box with surface drive but we had to use a Volvo race leg. Ahead of the time that!
Steve decided to do an outboard 23 to regain face (Spectre) and I did a few races with him in that.
Tony decided he didn't have enough problems so did another 23 with two Saab engines (another David Short/ Weslake screwball idea). These were Dolomite Sprint engines with about 200HP each but had the same chronic cooling problems that the race cars had. I think we saw about the same number of shattered components as there were supposed horsepower. Happy days.
About this time, Roger Clark (that Roger Clark) had a 23 built and fitted it with twin 140s plus a 65 in the middle (still under 4 litres) I guessed that around with him a few times when Jamie, his regular crew wasn't around. Best line in the pub? "When I was navigating with Roger Clark"
Did a race with Andy Bullen in a 16 with a 140. There wasn't room in the back for a 40 gallon tank plus snug fit navigator. I think we nearly got to the start line when it went nose-in. It nearly took my head off, never found my helmet. On the tow-boat back he told me he wasn't wearing his glasses!
I nearly had enough time and money to do Class3 and talked to Steve on what to do. Either extend the 16 or chop the 23. I didn't have the money for a complete new boat design. We knocked up the first tandem cockpit mould and blanked the 23 hull mould at 19'. This was NOT a good idea. The boat (Fang) looked great, purple again, soooo 1973!. What a pig. The wildest boat I ever went in. I think Steve burnt the moulds about 3 hours after the first race and went off to build the first 18.
Loads of really great times from that era. There were some fun people racing and plenty of different boats. The Cougars were quick, the Avengers showing their age the Fletcher Formation Dancing Team won The Golden Crank Award every week. Phantoms were winning a lot. Did the Puerto Banus week and some other thing in Portugal.
Sort of gave up to get married and stuff.
Bought a 16 (Mirage) for 4E in 1980. Raced it for a couple of years and won a lot of races, except in the flat, when Les Salvidge in the light weight Marshan 16 could beat us.Judy, his crew used to get up and under the foredeck in full Rollerball gear when it was rough! Fine till he sunk it one day.
Did 3C for a couple of years in a light weight 21(Mirage again). Always went well and won a few. Biggest failure? 20 minutes up on everybody (twins as well) coming back up the Thames from Calais when the fuel suction pipe broke in the tank. Sick. Oh, and barrel rolling it at Brighton in the flat calm!
3C was so competitive then, loads of Phantom 21s and Stapley cats plus the few oddballs, Catweasel was an ON Cougar circuit boat with a 2 seat box on top.It had about 20MPH on us till the wind blew. We were travelling over from Warsash to Cowes for RTO with them, when they hit the Bramble Bank at about 60. Don't think they ever found their suitcase.
Sort of got bored and old plus business was getting bigger. Last race was in a 21 with Geoff Purves.
Sorry if this has rambled on a bit.
Are any of the old timers on this forum thing? Is Steve still about? He wasn't too well when I last saw him, just when PB was closing (he was making some inflatable thing with Niel Holmes).
Don't know what to make of these Hondas. Seems that they go round very small circuits with the GPS going at about the same speed as a 21 with 175 did 25 years ago.
Could go into all that "there I was" stuff about the chart going over the side half way to Calais in a force 6 SW without any rescue boats, the bow tanks busted, I'm sitting on a scooter inner tube and there's only another 150miles to go. Tell that to the kids today? They think you're joking!
Lucky Frog (Don't Ask)"
