Sr 23

As you know about year ago I have started building new racing boat (XB22)
Unfortunetly we had some major problems with this project couse guy who have helped me with model and moulds wrecked my moulds and now I have case in court to get my money back from him. It's a long story to tell so I will not boring you with it

None the less as I never gave up with my plans and dreams I've started new project called Madness Marine SR 23

23 ft long ( 7.2 meter)
2 meters widht
Baltek Core construction
Hand laminated with quadraaxials glass fabrics
Hope to get about 500-550 kg for complete rigged boat less engine

Here are some pics of the first bottom

On second pic you can see that bottom have baltek core and side are made from airex foam. This particular boat are made like that couse owner (my father) wanted to have airex sides. Every next boat will be made with 100% baltek consrtuction. Stringers and bulkheads are also made with balsa.
Transom is made with marine plywood couse we believe it is stronger.

I will keep you updating with pics of deck while it is still under construction.

Great project. Unusual to use end grain balsa to form the longitudinals, what layup will go over them?

Go on, tell us about the damaged mould for the XB22, what happened?

Layup over the longitudinals will be 900gr/m2. If you have better idea please advise me. Hope it will be ok. Or should I put more glass on it??

Well, after the model was finished I could not be there for waxing and making mould couse I was working. He said that he will put 12 layers of realising wax on the model and then he will put gelcoat and laminate it. After that he supposed to make reinforcements for mould and took mould out of the model.
Everything sounds cool for me. We decided that mould will be have layup about 6000gr/m2.

When I came after 2 weeks to see how my mould looks like I saw this

The a$$hole put too few layers of wax thats why gelcoat looks like this, he took of the mould without any reinforcements and layup was about 1500gr/m2

I only asked because end grain balsa will only really be a former, so will offer no structural integrity in itself, so whatever layup goes over it, is all you'll have as your structure.

I won't go into the timber vs foam argument (or the differing types of timber), as it's been done to death on here, but if it isn't getting a structural member that the laminate holds in (timber, or similar). The laminate that goes over the former, whether foam, or balsa, needs to be substantial, and the fibre direction and continuity well thought out.

Looks to me like the paint has reacted with the gell for some reason, if that is the case no amount of wax would have helped.

Yeh, agreed. The paint now looks brittle too. Incorrect paint for the job methinks.

Aye, I do have it but I have to admit to buying two of these recently. (Ebay item 150287680577) They work in exactly the same way and at a price pretty well equivalent to making them if you need to buy the bits. Changed days. You can still have the diagram if you feel it's worthwhile.

Don't know exactly what happened with the mould because I havn't seen it since may 2008 but I've reserved copyrights for that project so the guy who broke it and where mould is located can't do anything with it.
After many months of waiting I'm having first trial on may 8th so we'll see whats next
