How does someone with little or no experience manage to enter in records week anyway !!

Looks like another of those "How Hard Can It Be" entries !!

Still, hope he makes a full and speedy recovery and is able to get some training and safer testing in before he tries that again.

Bob

What did the photo's tell you ??????? Did they tell you the gearbox blew out when he hit 95.

Why wasn't he prepared???? He spent months practising and had hours and hours of seat time in that cat.

Just curious with all your experience but how come you didn't know the difference between a 260 and a 280 Mercury outboard engine???

I have to agree with Bob on this!!

Roofer you say he was prepared.
How come he had to borrow a life jacket and helmet?
Why wasn't he wearing overalls?
Why didn't his fuel pump go off when he was thrown out of the boat, because we ripped the wiring out when we'd got the boat on the trailer.
His helmet got ripped off when he hit the water, if it had been a proper fitting or Properly Fastened One it might have saved some of the injuries.
This could have ended up as a fatality and how much good would that have done us as a sport.
That's enough of a rant for now but i hope it will give some people food for thought and I wish Mark all the best for a full recovery.

Because he didn't own race approved gear, Why should he buy them for one days use when he was offered use of someone elses foc.

Why wasn't he wearing overalls?

Because he didn't want to. Would it have made a difference.

Why didn't you turn the battery isolator off.

Helmet fitted correctly and was fastened up. If you look at the pictures the hull hits him on the side of head, this could have caused the helmet to come off he has a large gash under his chin caused by the helmet strap

This could have ended up as a fatality and how much good would that have done us as a sport.

Hope that answer's your questions.

POWERBOATS ARE DANGEROUS

Isn’t that the point?
In this nanny state that we live in its one of the few sports that you can still get that buzz!
Im sure that every one who straps an over powered engine to there butt and fires themselves across the water knows this.
I have been into sports bikes for a long time, and almost every year someone kills themselves at the isle of man TT, but every year they come back!

No one wants to die, but the people who do this sort of thing are well aware of the risks, he must have past scrutineering to be able to run, so the talk of his equipment is irrelevant!
Some of the best of British has come out of people’s sheds and back gardens!
Not everyone has big money and big sponsors. Just time and enthusiasm.

I say good for him turning up and giving some serious competition a run for its money.

Get well soon the sport needs people like you

We don't need a public witch hunt about Records Week, we already have quite enough issues with out publicly beating each other up over this. The spirit of Records Week has always been that the more records broken the better it is. The members of this forum should realize that hiding behind various login names are some VERY experienced and knowledgable members who dispense advice freely and may just know what they are talking about. The leap from a 70/80mph monohull to an air entrapment boat should not be considered lightly. Remember Records is a completely different kettle of fish to flooring the throttle over a short distance, after all 2km in either direction is a bloody long way to do over 100mph on water. There are issues on the scrutineering and driver experience front that will now be dealt with after this accident and I am sure that it will now be harder for people to just turn up and run records which is a shame but the long term future of Records Week and the integrity of it's volunteer personnel should not be called into question here.

on the safety equipment point i personaly gave mark a new jacket and helmet both new this year and had past both round britain scrutineering and records week and helmet was his size same as his bike racing one ,so dont think its an issue,
dont forget he was,nt first that week and dont think he will be last to do it.

think it would be far better if you al l put as much effort into discussing what an excellent week we had meeting freinds old an d new,and thanking the team that makes it ,robin, richard rescue, timing ,scutineers and lauching, plus all competitors who kept it running smoothly.

Cool good on you steve.

QUOTE, WELSHMAN, thanks steve for mentioning the people who work all week in all sorts of weather, as for this year we had most good days, 202 runs tell you this, and a lot of fast ones at that. Us officals who go there and give up our time do it because we think a lot about the sport and records week. MY 36years say that and some people have more than that, so please dont knock RECORDS WEEK like that. We know that not everything goes to plan but we try and do our best. Every thing was checked by the Scruteneer before the boat and driver were aloud to go on the water, especaly his LIFE VEST AND HELMET and if you read the rules they do say that they are the responsability of the driver.
We must try and keep Records Week going for as long as we can, even for the sake of meeting other people in the sport once a year.
So please dont kick people when they are down, it hurts at any time.

First time there and i thought it great. Must agree with Techteam, Steve h and welshman. As its been said you can't stop every incident happening. Don't let this week fade away.

If we can find a record the old bird can beat we will be there next year. oh and i may take the boat

hi im mark the talon pilot!just like to say thanks for the concern and get well msgs,im out of hospitol with a broken jaw, shoulder, teeth and colapsed lung.i wouldnt change anything about last wednesday as im hooked on powerboats and you only learn from your mistakes.the talon isnt easy to find info on unlike say a phantom and the only way then is to drive it until something goes wrong, unfortunatly in my case it went horribly wrong.i dont blame the organisers in any shape or form for my accident and i believe i had as much right as anyone else to enter that week regardless of experience.ive raced bikes in the past and learnt from my many crashes how to win.many thanks to roofer and hutchy for there support and i will be back on the river soon(in a canoe!)
Mark

Are you a member of Scream & Fly? Am sure there is loads of info/owners there - if not for your talon, for similar type of boats.
