As Richard probably already knows we have only found one lifter worth buying, and that is the Stainless Marine Gorilla 3 - it has less nuts and bolts in its construction, and will stand up to what seems to be the ultimate lifter breaker - our race boat!

The other thing I would consider with a Phantom is that most people regard the transom the best place to mount engine! Others may be able to confirm this - or not!

If thats the one to go for then that sounds good to me. I've only run manual ones so far.
All the phantoms I know that have had jack plates on have run better with them than without. That goes for 16, 18, 20 and 21 footers. Thats just my personal opinion obviously, i'm sure many people will disagree.
That is on a circuit boat too mind, maybe running on the sea you don't need that extra bit of bow lift you get from one.
I'll be running one on the 18 this season.

about jackin the engine up higher with standard gearbox,
the 250xs is a 3.0 ltr so even the standard gearbox had low water pickup aswel as the higher up pickups on the side,
I imagine if the top water pickups come out of the water, it wouldnt matter as the water is being forced up the lower one expecially as 70+mph

To be fair Willwood said watch your water pressure and as it's a Smartcraft engine it will set the alarms off before it goes critical (not like an XR2 which would just go bang!) - even my 2.5 EFI Offshore has an alarm! I also happen to know that Richard has a separate water pressure gauge!

Just a thought - it the top holes may be above the water level would the water just come out of those holes or do they join up further up? Never had a good look at the Fleetmaster box!

Phantoms run best with engine bolted to transom, I have to use a lifter on mine because of low transom but it alters handling badly.

Thankyou for all the info you guys.

When I bought the engine I ordered it with a Fleetmaster gearbox thanks to Nick Barsch, Cookee and Derek giving me some well appreciated advice with regards to wanting an allround engine/gearbox for wakeboarding/waterskiing and top end and it was due to it having a lower pickup

Times change and Cookee upped the anti a bit by his top speed

With regards to jackplates, Cookees certainly does the job but I dont want all that extra weight and 'things to go wrong' so Ill try and find a happy medium with just the bolt holes.

Too be honest I just wanted to get a big rooster tail when Im flat out. Jeez Im sad

Hi Ash, The seats came from Cobra, they are carbon fibre Suzuka race seats, with polished stainless seat supports. They take about 3-5 weeks to make and you can specify which type/colour of vinyl that you want.
If required you can even have the holes filled (which means that they dont cut them out!!), they cost about £850 a pair.

They also do them in GRP for a lot cheaper.

I designed the graphics by sketching some ideas, scanned them into my computer, redrew in autocad, played around with some software conversion packages to get autocad into plotter ready code then exported to a signmaker in London with a plotter. The Insane was balanced on the boat using photoshop making sure the Temporarily was just below the rubbing strip, to make sure it wasnt too far forward or too far back and then 30mm was cut out to take into account the rubbing strip which I changed to all white to visually make the side of the hull and deck like a large flat surface to design the graphics. The bits over the rubbing strip took ages and is designed so as to be replaced without damaging the main part of the vinyls as thats the expensive bit. The infills were cut using a scalpel by myself. I applied the vinyls myself using the usual methods that you would use.

Be warned it takes ages

I thought about it, it sounds even better now it looks as though the evening event might be held in a hotel, but to be honest if it was more towards May/June then it would have been a deffo.

If there is another sort of event around that time then I could muster up 5 or 6 other boats and maybe even let somebody use my spare 21 that I have for sale at the moment and we would come around the coast.

I ran at Coniston with my regular race prop first and it was pulling around 89+, with your borrowed prop we had a one way best of over 92 with a best average of 91.5 mph, so it made around 3 mph differance, but a phantom 21 with a 250 XS isn't a BananaShark race with a 280 EFI! I still think it will be better than the Bravo, but may need some of the bow lift putting back into it for a Phanton 21 leisure?
