I had the exact same thing happen a long, long, long time ago.

re-decorated me car with a Leyland Sherpa van, and split one of the fuel tanks in the process!

very scarey when it all comes to a silent rest, and you can just hear the splashing sound of the fuel hitting the road.
I got out surprisingly quickly. (through the passenger door)

Yep and the smell too.

I had to drag myself over broken glass through the front screen hole. There was only a small triangular gap between the road and the bonet as the back of the car was up in a hedge and the leading edge of the bonet was on the road.
