2.5 280hp advice

Went out on first trip this afternoon in solent. Weather great and for first couple of hours boat went like a dream [ phantom 21 merc 280 ]. Then had a bit of a drama when accidently activated kill switch before trying to restart engine after a break. Took 10mins of trying to start engine before i realised this was why it would not fire up. Reset switch and engine started first time, but for 5mins had very limited revs and almost seemed to be in limp home mode. Power then gradually came back and it was fine except when giving it hard throttle when revs would shoot up without any acceleration to match almost seemed like clutch slip in a car. Once up to reasonable speed all performance was back to normal. Not sure if kill switch incident and this slipping are related or not. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers Geoff

I am have absolutely no knowledge of these motors mate but the slipping sounds like you have spun the prop bush. Check it out before you go out again as you don't wanna lose it. Good luck. Paul

2 replies in 2 mins both with same advice, fantastic got to be worth checking out. Many thanks. Its a Tempest 23, is it a case of removing it and getting someone to take a look at it. Boat is kept at Hamble point dry stack so does anyone know of a mobile prop guy who could take a look.

Maybe the poor running was down to flooding from you trying to start it?

Yeah thats what i thought, think it was maybe flooded up and that slipping is completely unrelated.

No one mobile to my knowledge as you need a press to do bushes. Depends on where you live as to who is near. Steel developments in wandsworth or prop revs in poole.

May be may be not. I would leave it on the shaft, put motor in gear and see if the prop moves this still may not indicate though.. It should be solid. You may see where the rubber has moved in the hub. Good luck. Hopefully see you out this year.
Let up know how you get on. Paul

What bushes, hasn't a Tempest got a Flo Torq hub, if so, you just slip a new one in, 5 minutes max!

Is that right Tony and if so do you think this is still likely to be the problem. Not sure what a Flo Torq hub is but any ideas where i could pick one up as got engine being serviced tomorrow and wondered if guy could remove prop and fit new hub while he is there. Fantastic if thats possible could be back out for the weekend.
