i know he knows his stuff but it seems strange mercury would sell an oil for their motors that doesnt mix very well??perhaps he has a interest in reccomending that oil?? just my 2 cents worth.

nah Jay's not like that. he is suggesting this oil cus thats waht he feels is best or best of what oils he's tried. If this works well why try a different type that might not work as well?

this is what silkolene have to say.

Hello Jamie,

Further to your message below, I can clarify the situation as follows:

Firstly, motorcycle two stroke oils and marine two stroke oils are different in several ways. Firstly, marine products have boosted corrosion protection because of the environment they are used in. Secondly, there is the issue of fuel stability. There was a history of outboards suffering from gel formation in the fuel when left standing. A properly formulated marine two stroke has enhanced fuel stability. And finally, because outboards tend to be run at constant revs, unlike a motorcycle going up and down the gears to accommodate road conditions, they tend to run hotter. The National Marine Manufacturers Association issue a specification called NMMA TCW-3, which addresses these issues of performance.

For the engine you have stated below I would recommend the use of Fuchs Aqua Comp. I have attached a product data sheet for your records. I trust this information will be useful.

Best regards

Adrian Hill

We have used a number of oils over the years and currently use Liqui Moly - with very good results. We also sell their products and it is used in Optimax engines as well as Carb engines.

We used to be sponsored by Mobil - and again their Mobil 1 Outboard product was excellent. They were of the opinion that their oil was one of the very few fully synthetic oils on the market. Oils such as Quicksilver Hi-Performance really being classed as synthetically modified mineral oils rather than pure synthetic.

I remember 25 years ago speaking with Mobil about 'Mobil1' (which was the only reccomended oil for my car at the time) and even back then, they said Mobil1 was the only truely 'fully' synthetic oil on the market, and urged me to ask the same question to other manufacturers, who they said would waffle on about 'blended' oils and part synthetics, and they did!

Think it was 5/W50

hi guys
I got interested in the oil debate as a hobby other than boats I race 1:5 scale model cars, these cars use 23cc two stroke engines running at 30:1 premix and reving up to 20,000 rpm. We were recommended from Queens University Belfast (QUB)tuning department that Castrol A747 was the ultimate 2T oil now it is expensive and forget probably about tc3 however, here was the tests QUB done while tunning 250cc yams for moto GP ridden by Jeremy McWilliams
to cut a long story short every oil under test siezed the engine held flat out after x number of minutes. A747 it just did not sieze over x minutes
Engines stripped those running A747 were like new

you think R40 is good smell this stuff it is paradise

I use Castrol Biolube 2T, with no problems. used Silkolene oil for one year, stripped the engine down and it looked like it was covered in treacle. rings stuck in etc. also used Agip fully synthetic for some time, it took the crank out, Agip had the crank and oil analised, results came back that the oil was causing the bearing to skate on the journal. I have had a case where I left mixed Mercury HighPerformance oil in a can and after a period of time all the oil separated and sank to the bottom of the can.

fully synthetic oil

I have used Valvoline (the same as in roofers pictures)
constantly since running efis and although as you say are expensive, so are rebuids. I have had various discussions with Neil Holmes (who has built all my engines)on the subject, and Valvoline has always resulted in a clean motor with a minimum of sooty build up on the piston tops. I have heard of people using the Mercury oil in the 10L white containers but it is not fully synthetic, i suppose if you use a brand without problems it is not worth changing to save a quid or 2. After all it would not feel right if you werent paying a fortune to enjoy yourself would it!!!!!!!!!

Welcome home DBE1 how were the hurricanes??
