225 starting problem

Ok, i think this is a really simple question for someone to answer.

My friend has a Merc 225 promax (year 2000). Its been stood since November when he winterised it by pouring 2 stroke oil down the cylinders. By his own admission he put in a lot as he's pretty clueless.

We came to run it last weekend and couldn't get it started. We had great spark on each plug so we checked the fuel, we were getting fuel all the way round the engine as far as we could tell.

Just wondering if there are any simple idea's as i'm used to older engines without all the gubbins on that this has?

Any ideas welcome
Thanks

How fast was it cranking, if the battery was low the EFI can drop off line when it cranks. Make sure the battery is really good. Sounds like you have enough turns to have got a lot of the oil out anyway if the plugs are BUHW change them they do not like a lot of oil. And don't let Mr Brown winterize it next time !

Cheers James,

They were the kind of things i was thinking, I'll stick my battery on it tonight, i know that ones right. It wasn't cranking at huge speeds so could be the ticket.

James how can you be so sure that it's the Terminator twins that we're talking about!!!
We all know that they are very mechanically minded
Will are you down on Sunday?
The club racing season starts at Lancashire PRC based at Carr Mill near St Helens on Sunday at 2pm.
There should be a mixture of boats from Phantoms thru to F1/F2 cats plus juniors from the age of 9.
There is a bar and refreshments available all day so why not come and have a look if your in the area.
The weather forecast is excellent- not!!!!

Hi Taff,

I've still got a lot of work to do on my boat to get it ready for the weekend after so i'm expecting to be working on that all weekend. If i do finish it i'll be coming down to have a look. Good luck anyway in case i'm not there.
See you soon

Will

I imagine the ProMax is similar to the Opti in this situation,
a few people state that the magic number for starting is 10.4V+ but I've found it won't like starting at much less than 12V so as has already been advised get a decent fully charged battery and it should do the trick if you've got good spark and fuel.

if his engine is full of 2 stroke it aint gonna start until you run loads if fuel through it! try dropping some fuel in to the cylinders.

If they are BUHWs and if it's EFI replace them with BUZHW cos they have a resistor in them that allegedly stops any interference with the ECU.

I told you it was an easy one.

When one of the owners had wired in the trim switch he'd pulled out a purple ignition wire.
Once i plugged it in it started on the button first time. Took it for a little spin round and it goes like a rocket.

Cheers for the comments guys!

That has me confused to. If it has a spark then what was that connection stopping? Injectors??? The plugs were quite dry beforehand. But why would it control the injectors directly?
No idea!

The only purple wire i can think of is the accesory wire. Its switched live from the ignition switch runs the gauges and goes back to the engine and feeds a few sensors and e.c.m plugs.
