Blown rev counter

On my last but one run out we developed a slightly "hot" smell in the dash, investigation showed the rev counter glasses was filling with smoke. Quickly checked it out and found the back light bulb to have over heated - this was dropped out and continued the day without further problem AND a working rev counter.
On the last deployment the rev counter was not reading at all (back light bulb had not yet been replaced).
The new Quicksilver rev counter was replaced approx 2 years ago and was simply used to replace the old Quicksilver unit - all wiring remained the same and the back switches set up correctly for the engine.
The wiring loom is a standard Mercury fitting from the control box with no additional mods made.
Has anyone experienced something similar - should I consider fitting a fuse to the instrumentation to stop this kind of thing happening again?
