Cam Breakin
Have been looking in to choosing an oil to use for breaking in a new cam. Wouldn't normally have given it a 2nd thought, other than have spotted a lot of rumours over the years suggesting using mineral oil for breaking in a new cam, including recomendations by some cam manufacturers, but consistely without any technical evidence to back it up.
All my mota's (even the little generator) run fully synthetic, so I'm reluctant to chuck out 50+ kwids worth of oil that has about 10 minutes run time on it unless there's a good reason to.
Anyway, I asked mobil, and they reckon you can run a motor in without any problems using fully synthetic oil.
So I have to ask - what is the big deal that everyone seems to go on about using mineral oil to break in a new cam? Is it just an urban myth.

Dunno, never heard it!
Only ever religeously coated journels with molybdonum dysulphide grease (sp), pre-lube using cordless drill through dizzy 'ole' and ensured first 30 mins are run above 2000rpm.
never once had a problem. Though the only big pig iron I've ever run fully synthetic in, was the 502 efi (600+hp) in our race boat.

I'd never heard of it either. I always used gear oil when building the engine and then, like Jon, kept the revs up for a while to provide plenty of splash.
Edit. I just remembered a conversation I had with a lady Techie at Castrol a few years ago. She reckoned mineral oil was still (then) a better lubricant than a synthetic oil but the synthetic's benefit was it's ability to stand high temperatures. Things may have changed nowadays. But maybe it's not just a myth.
Second edit. Piper used to sell a special lube for coating their cam lobes during initial build.

I totally accept it's overkill to use synthetic at all - but it keeps me happy.
