Carburator problem - XR2
Hi guys
I have another problem. I heve put boat into the water and it runs really great - at high rpm
At low rpm (less than 3000) I have to much fuel in carburators. I know that because it is leaking from carb outside. All 3 carbs and engine are wet in fuel.
I thought that maybe they are dirty and inlet needle have stuck and that is why fuel comes out of carbs but after I put carbs into a part I discover that everything is super clean.
Than I thought that maybe float in carburator is badly adjust. But it was correclty adjust at 1.6mm (from carb body to top of float) just like manual says. I have readjust it to be at 0 mm cause I thought that maybe this is a problem. I have reassembly carbs put it into the engine and it helps a litle. It works better but not perfect bacause when I'm trimming engine up fuel comes from jets when engine is down at trim everything is ok, I can run low rpms when I leaving harbour after tha when I'm reving it up it don't whant to work at mid range rpm (1500 - 3000) after that it runs ok and when I slowing down engine works at idle for couple second and dies. After it stops I have to wait couple minutes cause there is fuel allover the carbs and I can't start it.
Please help me. What is wrong with my carbs???????? Did I adjust float wrong?? How should they be adjust?? Or maybe there is some different problem with it??
It is carb with one float. I'm telling you this cause in manual there are photographs with twin float carb

Gav's engine had the same problem and it was a problem with the adjustment of the carb floats. Jono will know more as he fixed the problem if I remember rightly.

If it's an electric pump it could be the pressure is too high, measure the pressure, should be around 5psi if my memory is correct

I think you have to hold the carb upside down when setting up the float/s.
Also it could be your reeds aren't sealing very well!!!

Pressure is ok cause it's orginal pump I had rebuild so it can only have to low pressure I think.
I was holding carbs upside down while setting it up but I'm not exactly sure how should it be set??
How can I check reeds??
The problem is even when I don't start engine but only pumping fuel into it when it stands straight it is ok when I trimming it up it over files. I will try to set floats again tomorow. Maybe it will helps

You can put an electric pump on any engine. fairly standard mod.

Maybe so ,,,, but to what aim?
The float chambers can only hold "X" amount which the mechanical pump handles OK.
Now if it was an EFI I can understand.

ok I have readjust float and the result is that I don't have power
I runs up to 4500 and it is over
But still carburators overfills
What can I do more??

A new XR2 came without a mechanical pump and a red holley as standard!

Maybe that is the reason why some carbs don't work properly
I have found that one of float valve stucked. Maybe that is the reason why it don't work.
I will put them to the engine tomorrow and will see if that was a problem

Are the floats okay? I had this on a bike engine once. Turned out the float was punctured and no longer floated! Doesn't matter what you set the float height to then if it spends all its time with its ass dragging in the bottom of the bowl. Just a thought.
If the needle and seat are okay, then the only other thing it could be is excess pressure in the fuel supply, although given that the engine seems to run okay when sitting straight up I'd still put money on the float assemble and/or needle valve/seat.
(Based purely on bike engine experience, so feel free to flame me if I'm barking up the wrong tree here! I'd be interested to know as my one has a similar problem I'm told.)

To check the seating of the float needle, can you not turn the carb upside-down, apply air pressure (lungs will do) to the fuel inlet point? If your cheeks don't go red & your teeth don't disappear ,,,,,, it's not seating properly.

Finally I have found a problem
After setting up floats and checking if they work properly, cleaning carbs inside out, I have found one interesting thing. If you check this link:

You will find part number 24. It is litlle cup made from rubber which somehow I DON'T HAVE in 2 out of 3 carbs.
That is the reason why engine is sucking more fuel and overfills at low rpm's. That is also a reason why the engine shakes when I accelerate (cause it don't have extra fuel which this litlle pump provides)
Waiting for those parts, and hope it will finally work properly

Most offshore boys take those pumps off because they cause probs such as bogging out (from over fuelling) when on and off the throttle in quick successions! Mine runs fine without em!

Just set the float levels up so that they are level with the carb body.
