Question compression Mercury 2.5 EFI Offshore engine

Hi guys,

I plan to buy following engine :
standard '92/93 Mercury 2.5 EFI Offshore V6 225hp
I was told these Mercs run fantastic.

What should be the compression ?
What things should I look out for ?

thanks in advance!
T.

Hello Toffy

Here is some bit of advice I can pass on:

Compression should be within 10% difference between the cylinders.

Look for:

Defective Oil warning module - there should be a control beep sound when you turn the key. If not i could be defective.
it is also known to sound of the alarm falsely when it is warmed up by the engine.

Leaking tilt ram gasket. If it leeks there will be trim fluid running from top of the ram.

Just get it running before you buy it - a good stable idle without to much "sneezing", and a WOT without rattle from the bearings. should be a good health indication.

Hope some of the experts have more to ad to this

/Troels

Burty gave me following usefull remark :
"2.5 EFI offshores i believe are 260hp not 225
the only 225 i can think of is the promax which isn't a so called EFI motor. the cowl your friend posted is a 2.5 260 one"
-> Thanks Burty, guess I must figure out with the current owner what I'm gonna buy

A Belgian boat friend also confirms it to me.
The engine cowl in the picture is exactly the same as his and his has also 260hp. His boat and engine run great btw...

OK, all that said I return to my questions :
What should be the compression ?
What things should I look out for ?

Kind regards, T.

if its a 260 then the compressions should be around to 135 to 140 mark

Usefull info from Jay Smith below.
The puzzle gets solved... Thanks so far !

"I build Burty's motors, in fact it and 2 more are in transit and in customs clearing now.

The 225 Pro Max is an EFI engine and is steel sleeved with cast pistons. It has a healthy compression of 130 ish LBS at sea level. The 260 is a forged piston , coated aluminum sleeved race engine and has a healthy compression at sea level of abouts 135-140 ish........

Good luck"

I think it should be a 260, since the guy that sells told me its a 92/93 engine. I don't know much about Mercs but I guess Pro Max's are newer engines... Saturday I go on site with my brother co-pilot + another friend race boat driver. Together we'll figure it out. (engine serial number, we'll take pictures, measure compression, probably do testrun etc...)

Any more tips ?
What should we look out for this saturday while inspecting this engine ?

Thanks guys ! Seems the marinepower.com server is temporarily down for maintenance... gonna try it later.

Bad news!
The engine and boat are sold. I'm too late.

Gonna continue on my Ring 16ft and Evinrude 140hp but keep my eyes open for a well powered bigger 21ft phantom, ring or bernico...
Greets to y'all

Toffy, which boat were you talking about? Why would you change to a bernico or so? Those 2.5 consume a lot more than you v4 140. I dont know for what you want to use it. If you want to go in the ski racing i would say go and buy it. If you dont i would not do it. Thats only my opinion.

@ Bigboy : If I see the right opportunity I 'd like to upgrade.
Only reason is to get a smoother less bumpy ride :-) Longer boats need stronger engines. I don't know the fuelconsumption of those 2.5 's. I guess it should be only a bit more than my carb Evinrude V4 140hp, which seems slightly tuned to I guess 165hp by Van Akelyen (I got confirmation on this by the previous owner). It 's more or less the same as the one that you were after (read this on a german site). Did you buy and install this one on your Fletcher by the way ?

the boat I was going for was a Phantom 21ft at north Holland.
Below I give you several links. I've noticed the guy that sells it, changed his links now and then, so don't shoot me if they don't work anymore :-)
http://www.speurders.nl/watersporten...k_mercury.html
http://www.marktplaats.nl/index.php?...-29028-4128-33

It seems a nice boat, but as I said, it's sold.
Why the hell is his add still on line ? Anyway, he told me on the phone it's sold.

Best of luck!
T.

I doubt that... It looks like a 21ft to me, as it is on a double axe trailer... 21ft is about 6,30meter.
I believe dutch people can also measure ?

Is to big to be a 18. It's indeed 21ft i guess. That boat was for sale a long time.. Yes that motor is mounted on my boat. But i think mine is still original. They say a lot off things like mine is tuned etc. But i dont know or this is true or not. Comsumption of a 2.5 is around 80liter/hour at wot i guess!! I think mine(V4 140) comsumes 30/h at wot
Toffy, i bought that boat for the motor. The boat is back for sale for 600euro.

Hmmm.... starting to feel a bit happier about missing this deal... His add shows the boat was a '93 as well as the engine.
Uncertain dates, uncertain hp of the enging and let's net forget it was for sale on the internet for quite some time....
I don't think this guy knew what he was selling...
As long as I know what I'm buying

What do you think about this one Burty ?
It should be a '95 in mint condition... however the guy that sells didn't give me a look at the back so far... I'm waiting for his feedback
