Crusader 16
I have a crusader 16 and a mariner 3 cylinder 90 to go on.
Is it worth off setting to one side or leave central.
Also is it worth lifting a hole or leave cav plate in line with hull bottom?
It used to have a 55 and do 45knots

crusader
Hi,
I had a 17 with a 70 on the back, I had mine centred. They have a pretty deep vee so I had no probs with the 70. I did decide to stick a 115 on the back which made life quite interesting tho! The extra power gave it a penchant for chine walking which is obviously nothing to do with offset but I think if I had held on to the boat I would have put basic trim tabs on.
I'm of the school of thought to leave engines centred and put any heavy stuff to the starboard if its a right handed rotation motor.
Also, I found with my crusader the engine needed trimming out a fair bit to alleviate the torque

Interesting point offset or not ?
In the old days outboards did not have the benefit of lo water pick ups or power trim and yes the Avengers and crusaders had a deeper v and less beam the modern day equivalents
The old days cavitation was a problem if one mounted the engine too high with the old brass prop technology available at the time. Stainless props nowadays are designed to run higher and any chine riding can be corrected by trim.
I would offset the motor and I think you could go at least 1 inch up above the keel with the cavitation plate- many racers now set the prop shaft level with the keel or a bit lower in the rough.
You don't say what prop you have and if you have power trim

Centre with Cav plate 3" above Kiel. Are you sure it's a 21" ? Small hub Lasers are generally even sizes !

I am having to have to re trim the inside. I have searched the Internet for crusader pictures but I guess there are not many left. Or the ones that are will be sat rotting under a hedge somewhere. Mine is nearly painted and ready to start rigging.
Already had an ear bashing from a crusader lover on the Isle of Wight about me going away from original colours and engine.

Keep Crusaders on the water regardless of the originality. Your combination very nice. 13"/14" prop diameter with 20"/22" pitch for recreation. Rigged loads of these little Gems. Best 16 on the water. Good advise above raising engine may be required to hit Max RPM
