DIY gelcoat repairs - advice sought
looking for advice on gelcoat repairs, just the odd chip and scrape we have here and there on the boat, need tips on products to use, matching the colour and how best to apply etc??

 Ooh! I'll keep an eye on this thread - I may even learn how to fix the hairline cracks on the gelcoat around the splashwell on my boat!

I really wouldn't bother trying to fix those. Lots of work and they will most likely come straight back!!!

grab a tube of plastic padding gelcoat, available at most chandlers, seems a good match to aged faded white gelcoat. the key to a good repair is in the preparation, a bit of 80 grit sandpaper to rough the area up and a bit of acetone to clean prior to applying new gelcoat does the trick.

Hmm. True, they're not exactly big, just unsightly when you look closely.
Mind you, they are all on the top deck moulding - the hull itself is sound as a pound used to be.
Maybe I'll just learn not to look at them instead!

if you dont want to get to involved you could try some coloured car wax,that might take you eye away from the crack

trying to repair gel coat chips rather then hairline cracks... thks Gav, but how do you apply and finish to get a nice finish etc?

will need to be finished with 400/1200 wetordry paper and a finishing compound, farecla G7 will do the trick, for best result you need a polisher....
