You can't beat the cummins 5.9 610 ft lbs torque and massive hp is obtainable if you modify them.

Yeah, but just a tad lighter than a powerstroke! (like half the weight)

The problem of course is the very low max rpm of the Duramax. Sounds really low revving in that vid.

The cummins are indeed very nice, as long as you own a set of Bose noise cancelling headphones!

BTW, monsterously high torque figures look nice on paper,, but they're your worst enemy in real life.

I don't think they're noisy infact its less noisy than my shogun 3.2 did was.

The high torque certainly doesn't seem to hinder the dodge truck the engines fitted in, we went over the alps towing a trailer that weighed over 7 tons and you wouldn't have known the trailer was there.

Why are diesel engines so much heavier than a petrol engine from the same family. Cast iron head to handle all that compression?

Also do they use forged pistons (again because of the high compression) as that would explain why they rattle when cold?

Well, anything really, but I'm refering to boats. It's a drive bustin nightmare.

Because the torque is generaly much higher for a given power (due to lower revs), and that the diesel engine is so 'harsh', the whole block, crank and general structure of them has to be more robust to avoid distorsion or cracking (read, thicker castings = heavier) most modern big diesels, such as the Duramax, have Ali heads, which is actually better at getting rid of the heat. Mine sadly, are cast iron.

Don't the fords have a lot of gearbox problems?

I have trawled many a pickup truck forum and have come to the conclusion that for everybody thats had a problem with a Dodge,Chevy or Ford there are an equal number of people including me who have had no probs at all,and I would'nt swap.The problem is you don't know the service history,mods,or the way 'problem' pickups have been abused(driven)I thought and researched long and hard before deciding on an F350,and yes the ride is'nt as good as the Chevy and the older 7.3 is a bit noisier,but diesel power mag has just tested the Dodge,Chevy and Ford and as a workhorse tow vehicle the Ford came out best,and i need a workhorse,I also prefer the cab in the Ford and so far my transmission has been fine(famous last words)and so in conclusion just go out and buy what YOU like.

To be honest I prefered the ford over the dodge but did a search and found loads of gearbox problems with the ford autobox. The dodge is used to tow a fifth wheel trailer that weighs over 7 tons and has done 12k without any problems at all so far.

Thats very impressive,i read of one guy who replaced his Ford gearbox after 42,000 miles,and just below that post was one from someone who had done 310,000 miles and a lot of that was towing,i do think a lot of problems arise from peoples driving styles and not knowing how to keep auto gearboxes temps reasonable.

I would think thats probable in most cases.

I just bought a TST powermax for my cummins cr diesel.
I have also a F 250 7,3 l TD with a hypermax chip,and 5 inch exh and cold air antake ,the dodge is still stock ,and compared with the ford its a turtle.
I hope to see a big gain with the tst powermax.
btw ,the f 250 is for sale,I have it for 3 years and have never had problems,and i drive it hard.
