Evinrude 225

I'm the first to admit I know virtually nothing about outboards (which is unforunate since I now have two of them) but I am having the most incredible problems starting one of my engines.

My port side 1988 (loop charged VRO) is difficult to start cold on a good day. Today, it defeated me. It refused to start at all. It seems to want to go and will produce some exhaust after firing for six or seven revolutions but then gives up the ghost.

Any ideas?

my 2.0L V4 Looper loved a whole heap of choke & a shed load of cranking (when cold)

I'd then have to release the choke and crank her till she started.............& always did

I had terrible problems starting a v6 johnson from cold, starter would saw and saw until the battery was almost flat. My cure was simpy to replace the omc primer bulb with a merc one. The bulb would go rock hard when primed, engine always fired up then after about three revoultions of crank.

Thanks Chaos and Wild Thing. Using a combination of your methods the engine fired up immediately today!

Engines are pretty simple things. As long as they've got fuel, and a spark at the right time then they'll start.

Glad to hear it worked. Not looking forward to firing mine up after the winter lay-up.

Yep, think I understand the fuel and spark thing. It's the "at the right time" bit that evinces my Homer Simpson moment.
