Fitting nose cones/lwp's

Anyone on here fitted nose cones or low water pickups to gearboxes?
Looking for some tips. It's going on a tohatsu 50.
Do I need to weld it or can it be epoxyd on?

Cheers

I did one on a merc v6, it was welded. So far so good!! I dont think epoxy would last long.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get mine welded as well. Is it best to have gear oil in the case while it's being welded? I was going to cut off a skeg from another engine to weld onto mine (bottom is broken off).

The one did was totally stripped bare. Anything that absorbs the heat away from the weld will just make the job harder.

OK, thanks for the advice.
Apparently the ones at steel developments won't fit tohatsu 50's, so may have to get one direct froms Bob's.

Just fitted a BMS big foot to my Yam, welded first then epoxy filler over. You'll need extra filler as Bobs don't supply much with the kit. I used Hempel 2 part epoxy and worked out ok but you'll need to give up to 5 days to cure correctly. Found BMS great to deal with and responded to all queries, hope this helps

Thanks. Yeh I was reading about that as well, apparently folk use PC-7? epoxy.
Do you just drill and tap a hole above the wash plug?

Yep that's what I did but I'll be placing a small/thin nut on the outer side as the aluminium isn't too deep, you'll only get about 3 threads. Not too well up on my epoxy fillers all I can say is the Hempel worked out grand seemingly the longer it takes to cure the harder it'll set

Fairly straight forward, although I had to weld a small piece of aluminium at the top of the nosecone just to give the filler something to hold too, you can see it in the first pic. Also had to re-tap the threads at the top due to heat distortion I think. Other than that make sure you've loads of sanding discs

OK. Yeh I've got plenty discs, I think I'll get the welding done by a professional though, I've not done aluminium before.
How did you go about filling the standard intakes?

I just filled them with the epoxy. Took a bit of messing and I did one side at a time, let it settle and go again. Must have given it 4 or 5 skims. The Hempel stuff was good to sand after 16hrs, still chewed the discs though so try not to let it get too hard

Ok thanks. Did you prime the case before painting it?

Looks stunning ! Job well done.
Was the goal to improve on top speed ? I was told once under 70-80 mph a nosecone actually can slow you down. I'm sceptic about that statement, so I'm curious how it worked out for you ?

BMS low water pick up

Hi Toffy, yep I'm chasing top speed. I'll have her in the water tomorrow and give before and after data. I found I lost water intake pressure, particularly in cornering with the prop shaft inline with the pad, which is primarily why I installed it. Yammies like a lot of water, min 25psi but it also allowed me to raise the motor, I'm getting loads of lift with my current prop. I also installed a Hydrotech phase II kit so it'll be hard to know if any improvement is down to motor lift alone. I got 69mph at 5,600rpm last year but mounts were shot and chine walk wasn't pleasant. Seen 5,800rpm once, in a chop but unfortunately no GPS data. So originally took on to do the mounts and sure when it's on the bench your as well do heads, tuner, reeds, nose cone..........! Ha you know how it goes, I'll post results after a bit of testing tomorrow

BMS low water pick up

Results are in , only got a quick spin this evening but managed 74mph/6,100rpm and chine walk not gone but certainly manageable. So all in all a good winter spent in the workshop. No noticeable down side handling wise with the nose-cone. Time to pitch up!

That's a decent increase! Is that with the engine at the same height?
I ordered a nose cone from steel developements but I think it's too big for my 50. Think I may need the inline kit.

Low water pick-up

I have her lifted all the way where as last season I had to have it as low as possible due to water intake. There's also the engine mods to consider so I can't attribute any increase to nose cone and lift alone.
