Flowcoat

iv just had my ring 20 hull soda blasted back to gel and the results were really good, counted 7 layers of antifowl/epoxy primer!!!!

i am gonna fill the small dinks with gelcoat filler and then apply flowcoat over the whole bottom & sides (up to the bump strip)

iv read loads on Polyester Flowcoat and it seems to be a good option but am undecided how to apply it, iv got a spray gun 1.4mm set up but wont it be to thick to spray with? or will i get the same result with a roller after a flatten & polish??

anyone ever done this?

There's a couple of ways to do this.
Yes you can spray it with a HVLP gravity gun using the largest tip you can get. But it would be much better to use a gelcoat gun for the job, they're not expensive and will make life a lot easier!
Alternatively, you can use a pressure pot, use a 1.6/1.8 tip with 10lbs pot pressure and catalyze a little light to stop the gel curing in the pot. Also, I find if you add a little acetone, about 5-10% (no more) it flows nicer and doesn't harden as fast in the pot. But don't hang around as the gel cures much faster at increased pressure. Also mix in small quantities and run some acetone trough the lines between shots to keep them clean.

Another slightly easier way to do it with much faster build up is to roll and skim.
Mix your gel and roll it on evenly with a poly roller. Roll on two layers letting each one go tacky between coats. Roll on your third coat (a light enough coat) and take a metal spreader (spatula) and skim the wet gel to a smooth, flat surface. This fills any dimples in the previous gel layers.
Repeat this until you have about 6 layers of gel down. Put two or three extra layers on corners and curves to sand into.

You will want to use spray gelcoat if you choose to spray and brushing if you choose to roll and skim. Flowcoat has a wax added and you only need wax in your final layer to allow it air cure. All other layers without wax will stay tacky for bonding of next layer.

Mix some styrene wax into your gel for your final layer.

Hit the whole surface with a board and 120 grit to fair it out, then you can go through the grades with a DA sander.

Have fun!!!!!

Alan

wow, many thanks alan!!

think im gonna go down the route of rolling it on, sounds much easier, my spray gun is gravity fed but they only do set ups for it max 1.7

i have ordered a 5litre tub of flowcoat which they quote as enough to do 8m square, do you think this will be enough to coat a ring 20 all the way up to the bump strip or should i order somemore as i dont wanna run out half way thru the job.

thanks again

Yeah its probably less chance of going tits up on you!

I'd say you would be best ordering a 20kg drum by the time you get 6+ coats down and sand half it off again!

Also, order gelcoat and styrene wax seperately, flocoat has wax already mixed and will mess you up, bond and colour wise.
Only add wax to your final layer of gelcoat to allow a tack free cure.

ok i understand now i think

i have ordered 5Kg Black Polyester Topcoat Flowcoat & Hardener.

so if i order 15Kg Black gelcoat will this be enough for my first layers, then the flowcoat as final coat spatula'd smooth?

so i take it this will be an all day job that has to be applied in 1 day??

thanks, sorry to ask so many questions but just dont wanna get this wrong

cheers

Yeah, what he said can do it in two days, thats the reason for no wax!

15kg gel should be fine with the other 5 for final layer.
Do 6 coats, skim every third coat and put an extra two or three on corners and edges as you will sand harder on these!

Feel free to ask as many questions now as you like! better now than after!

ok so the place i ordered flow coat from off the net sent me a email saying they cant ship to channel islands so ill be getting wax to add to the gelcoat i bought today, i got 15litres of clear gelcoat+hardener and enough super black colour pigment to color the lot (3 small tins).

im gonna try an get it all done in 1 day on saturday, just a few little things i could do with knowing to make my life easier. if i get 2 poly rollers and a nice 'perdy' brush to touch in with and lay up edges thick, a metal bladed spatular (like a decorators filler spatula) is this all i need? what should all the tools be soaked in or wrapped up between coats?? and what is the easiest way to mix up gel+hardener (ratio wise) and how much should i mix up at a time? time between coats (approx)?

and also i was thinking 6coats seems quite extreme the white gel that it has at the mo is in fairly good condition, i am just doing this as a means of tidy-up/re-colour. or is there method behind the 6 coats to get it flat???

thanks!!!!

ok so i chickened out on the big task of gel/flow coat and sprayed the whole thing with international perfection.

the gel that the soda blast left was a great key and managed to get 6 thin coats (1 primer) and looks really good

now i get to flip it over an do the other side
