Fuel Consumption.
In order to calculate range, can anyone give me fuel consumption figures for the following:
Yanmar 315hp Diesel's
Mercruiser 454 Magnum's
Mercruiser 350 Magnum's
Mercury XR2 outboards
Mercury 225 opti
mercury 300Xs
Assume that all motors are in standard condition.
Thanks.

I can only give a 'educated guesstimate' on some of those, with some of the guestimates, based on personal experience.
Yanmar 315hp Diesel's........15 galls/hour flat out.
Mercruiser 502efi...............a tad over 40 galls/hour flat out
Mercruiser 454 Magnum's......35 galls/hour flat out
Mercruiser 350 Magnum's.........30 galls/hour flat out
Mercury XR2 outboards.............can't remember
Mercury 225 opti.....................don't know
mercury 300Xs.........................don't know
If you're thinking about RB, as a rough guide, I reckon to run a pair of 400-ish hp motors (sterndrive) will be (depending on sea conditions) 16000-18000 quid in fuel. So anyone thinking of running a pair of hairy chested big blocks (500+hp) better get ready to suck on the thick end of 20k, or more for fuel.

Just found some data online, that says a merc optimax 135 (2.5 v6) uses 42.5 US gallons per hour at WOT. which if my calcs are right, is 36 Imperial gallons per hour. One assumes you can add gph, pro rata with the extra hp of the 225, 250 and 300.
From what I can make out, these opti motors are infinitely better on fuel that the old regular carb & efi two strokes when used in moderation of the throttle, but when they're flat out, the savings are far less.
No experience of my own though, so would stand corrected.
Always thought a XR2 was 25+ GH, and an efi was quite caplable of gobbling up 40.

Bigger opti's are 3 litre and definatly use around 20 gph, my modified 2.5 does just over 30 gph.
Xr2's are 18/20 gph.
Jonnyrude v8's are 40 plus

At constant WOT??
I'm very surprised at that, as it makes a XR2/EFI similar galls/hp/hour as a sterndrive 4 stroke, which we all know full well, they're not. In fact, they're greedy 2 stroke bastards.
Average GPH messin about on the lake/bay waterskiing, is a different world intirely from flat out in 200 mile legs on a race. I guess time will tell.

The OMC factory guys always told me crankshaft horspower divided by 10 at WOT gives you US gph
The Merc guys would disagree...ever waterskiied with a 1500 inline 6!!!
Its a great rule of thumb.

My 300XS takes 91Liter @ WOT (acording to the SC5000) but on a average day out on the water i don't see more than 25Liter an hour after refueling .

On the cat for racing we work on 1ltr per mile at WOT with the 200xs. The XRS was about 1.5ltr pm. The average race speed for us last season was in the region of 73mph.

The problem isn't that my foot is too small but you can't (may not) floor it in the area i live , there are just a few places here where you can get to WOT and those tracks are not longer than 6/8km so there is no fun .
If you do try to get a litle more action there is always a copper around the corner to give you a nice peace of paper wich costs round 300euro's .
This summer i will hit the Ijselmeer some times and see what kind of consumption that will give

I saw the movie ..'puppet on a chain' I think it was, looked like you can do a James Bond anywhere?
Maybe do like the locals in Venice, just get a narrower boat so you can escape down a small alley way

I seem to remember a post somewhere on here about the Dragon P1 boat (Extremeboat.com) that Jackie and Mike run - I think it is running twin 525sc Mercury blocks, and they were burning about 350 lph at race speed (Think thats just under 80 gallons - depending on which side of the pond you are from)
So 12 days at 3 hours average per day at the speeds that boat can do - ouch! Don't forget by the time the round britain happens fuel will be 6 quid a gallon
Think Im going to get a rib to tow me through the canal - is that allowed? do you think?
