getting paint off hull?

Does anyone know the best way to remove paint from a hull ? i have got a thick hand painted tapering line from bow to stern and am thinking of getting it off if its not too difficult and would it need re gel coating afterwards? thanks nick.

really do not know looks like its been handpainted and maybe laquered over have not tried anything yet as i did not want to get int a job which was going to be grief.
