Help needed with rewiring problem

Hi All I am rewiring a twin engine boat. It is a 30 ft speed boat with twin Mercedes diesels. I have replaced all of the gauges and fitted a gps speedo. I am struggling to find the correct way to wire the fuel gauge and the speedo. I have separate ignition switches for each engine. The gauges (rev counter, oil, water and temperature) are also separate for each engine. Can anyone tell me the correct way to connect the speedo and the fuel gauge?

The easy way is to run it off one engine but the right way would be wire it to both circuits but use inline blocking diodes.

In that way the gauges will work even if only one side is live. Do the same with the gauge lighting circuit.

If you're not sure how to do that get an electrician to have a look as a back feed from one circuit to the other can cause some dramatic results. Think a flat battery trying to get a charge via you're spangly new battery gauge.
