i think the tone of this thread is awful and im not singling anyone out.. take a step back guys and look from the outside for a minute. everyone is entitled to an opinion.. even the dull and ignorant (quote).
the yanks do tend to favour cubic capacity over lighter more efficient engines, probably because theyre petrol is so f***ing cheap so they can..!! however in a quest for efficiency, quietness and smoothness even mercury are chucking the big blocks out for smaller more modern technology (yes i know superchargers have been around since mad max!) that must be an indication of the way the market and technology is leading?? the 275 hp is probably a constraint of current fourstroke outboard technology, efficiency, size, cost and weight , it certainly aint the limit of a supercharged engine is it.
the japs may not be known for inventing things but theyre certainly good at making things better and i know my car engine (not boat) is one of the most powerful n/a 1.6 ltr techno whizz things goin, and its got a nice pack of torque to go with it, it dont compare to a small block chevy though!!!
is torque everything on a boat?? i know alot of the big boys are chucking theyre lambos out for smelly lorry engines.. is that why??

If nissan 350blah blah motor can make 500hp reliabley why dont they put them in big ass articulated lorry's instead of the usual 15 litre turbo diesel crap that weights loads and only makes 450hp How about tractors too, my peugeot 1.9 GTI motor makes more power than most of them. A Hayabusa motor now that would really get a tractor moving/plowing/towing
Also a tuned mercury 2.5 can make 350+ hp at the crank. The powerhead is well compact and weights next to nuffing, american too!!!

Glen,
I totally agree with you mate, i get the impression that members are allowing their personalities to spoil what is only meant to be a very interesting debate.
The big problem with Forums is that people can sometimes make assumptions as to what is being said, especially as they have no facial expressions to judge.
If we are unsure as to what someone is saying, all we need to do is ask politely for an explanation. Its not a crime.
I would GUESS that the reason the Lambos are being changed for smelly lorry engines is because lorry engines can be rebuilt and salvaged more cost effectively than the Lambos.
After all, what engines are my friends at the Victory Team using when money is no object?
So what point are you trying to make then Johnny Boat dude?

As a point of interest - class 1 is all petrol now and Pro V have taken the Seateks (Lorry engines!)

To clarify Cookee's point, diesel is now banned in Class one, it's not a choice thing.
This has happened coz a few people were offended by the POLLUTION

Bloody heck,
Who and why did they ban diesels from Class 1? There are some right nob jockeys about when money is involved.
I always thought it was good for technical development to have the two engine types competing.

It's laughable, coz the amount of polution a dozen boats, racing once every couple of weeks puts out, is probably only a fraction of that put out by a single trans-atlantic flight. And how many such flights run every day of the year?
So they're hardly gonna save the world with such a futile gesture.

I believe that Heathrow handles 1200 flights a day alone. And the petrol boats may not put out as much pollution as diesels but they consume more in the way of fossil fuels which is detrimental anyway if were going to be whiter than white.

Yes, it's purely on this selfless 'save the planet, use less fuel' charge, that I run diesels!
