Marinisation... anybody?!?

Evening guys,

Hope you all had a great xmas and new year,

Had a bit of an idea and am starting to carry out some light research into it!

I was wondering who out of everyone here could help by providing any resources of information or general knowledge and pointers with the basics of marinising an engine designed for land use, say perhaps for arguments-sake a 1300 inline-4 motorbike engine and making it applicable to high-performance marine use?

Anything from the modifications to be made to the engine itself and it's cooling system down to the required features of the drive it should be coupled to.

Any info at all is much appreciated,

Depending on its use it can be as simple as replacing the radiator with an heat exchanger. Water-cooler exhaust manifolds are nice if you can get them as an off-the-shelf item, otherwise you could fabricate a set of jacketed headers if you're handy with a TIG and some stainless, or just heat wrap some headers and vent the engine area a little more.

If you are expecting some severe duty and alot of regular use then it would be wise to check tolerances inside the motor, you want a little more clearance inside a marine motor. This is due to teh fact that the motor always operates under heavy load (moving water).

bike engines

If you go on to you tube and search for Huyabusa boat you should find something from a mad lot in Norway who have the 1300 Suzuki engine in a boat running a surface drive also look at other things that people have put them in like smart cars and karts!

You appear to have read my mind!
Then again perhaps I gave it away, I don't know how many motorbikes have used that engine but I'm guessing not many!
Have seen the smart car videos which is what sparked the idea...

the problem with motorbike engines is loads of revs but not much torque so a very small power band i would say you would need some sort of multi speed transmission and a very very light boat

Rig it attached to it's 6 speed sequential gearbox rather than casting yerself a new crankcase.
