Merc 260

After how many hours should a 260 have new rings fitted?

I'd have thought Ross would be the one to answer that.

He's very knowledgable for his age you know.

He might even be able to wangle you warranty replacements on the old rings, he knows his consumer rights

you could always not bother and then wait for the bang that way it might do 65 hours and you can come back and say Burty was wrong they do 65 hours between rebuilds

I could do Burty. I think it's almost time for a rebuild. Trouble is I'm guessing how many hours I've done. So a bit of a lottery really. The sooner the better I think.

Always heard "50h", but I also heard that hours @ +6k rpm count double ?

Besides a log of 'hours since last rebuilt', can one take a look through the spark plug holes and evaluate of 'it's time' ?

Which brings us to the next question : how do you evaluate exactly ?
Is an inspection throught the spark plug holes sufficient ? Or do you have to take off the heads ? Other alternatives ?

yup, got one for sale if needed, £ 200 plus postage, you'll need a compressor though. used to use it on my 280's after every outing. only takes half hour which is a well spent half hour if it saves a hole in it.

I've got a leakdown tester in the workshop if you want to borrow it...just make sure it finds it way home when your done

It's in the rear workshop, on the second set of racking on the right as you go in, 2nd shelf up, in a red plastic box in the top of a grey plastic container
