Merc Towerblock

I'm thinking of buying another project boat it comes with a 150HP merc straight 6 outboard, obviously an old motor, i'm not sure if its a runner. Some nice person tried to nick it from the boat and in doing so has cut all the cables, electrics, fuel lines etc, so doubtful if i could get it running prior to purchase. Could anybody tell me if parts are still available for these motors? what were they like as motors? reliable, easy to work on or avoid like the plague! Any info would be most helpful. More into inboards than outboards.

Just done a quick search on the parts finder, and all the powerhead parts etc are still available, some prices are POA, but nothing comes up as NLA!

If the engine wiring loom is cut, the problem might be stopping it rather than starting it.
Probably depends on the year though, but I think it'll run without the loom connected, but will need the 'make to stop' connection.

I see that and thought what a cracking project will need a lot of work IMHO. But heck thats what projects are. Shame he says its a Fletcher !!!! it's so easy to spot the Classic Avenger lines. There seems a lot of the straight 6's about so I'd not worry to much, It,s going to cost twice what you thought in time & money anyway Just lie to her like the rest of us.
I did notice a lot of moss /outside marks on the fordeck, think you need a pre-look to see if it's damp.
See it has the genuine Old RPM indicator & the trusty "Sestrel" Speed Grid, got power trim be intresting to see if it has any old thrust block marks

Lied about the last project! told her it only needed a lick of paint took 6 years. If the fordeck is damp could that be an issue with grp? never owned a grp boat before, only wood.

Nah i was thinking it only had a small cockpit cover over it and might have had some water get inside inside thats all, A full cover you wouldn't have had the marks on it. I'm no GRP expert but they can suck up the water depending what they are cored with.

Avenger

Thank you all for your help/advice. Never got a chance to bid, it was removed from ebay a day early with a note saying no longer available for sale.

Ooh, that's extra crap if you'd even shown seriousness by going to view it.

As an alternative, i'm thinking about the one at Kingston its condition is about the same as the Avenger was.

i know its annoying as its happened to me too but on the other hand i've removed stuff from ebay before the end of auction as people have come round to view things and offered me more than i had the reserve set at to end the auction early so i took it because no one is going to risk potentially getting less money to let the auction run to the end, they just use it like an autotrader advert.
