Anyone know why a xr2 runs fine and revs perfect until underload it stalls? changed the stator cleaned the carbs no difference. Theres a black box on top of the power head with 2 bullet connectors but not connected could this solve the problem? thanks Taz

The black box on top is an idle stabiliser. What revs you got at tickover?

Weak ignition/ really mucky plugs? Could be enough for the spark to be ineffective when under load? Just a guess but poss worth looking at?
Failing that my guess would be poor fuel supply, does it stall immediately or after a sec or two?

Is it running in six? I think from memory they can sound ok on one bank untill ya put em in gear then they wont go. Check ya switch boxes. The advance plates inside the stator have a habit of breaking wires where they pivot to. If not i'd go carbs next. Mebbe stuck floats?
Oh and normally disconnect the idle stabiliser.

Prob floats stuck then. The advancer is the black part on the inside of the stator that is moved off the throttle arm not the actual stator which is outside of it.

Ya can normally see if the wires are broken without takin the flywheel off. The wires break just where it exits the advancer. They fatigue break after time.

Looking at it from another angle disconnect the black/yellow from the switchbox to see if its a short to ground in the control box when you shift. And I think by advancer he means the trigger.

I'm not sure what the problem is after seeing the engine run, it is really confusing.

With the boat strapped down onto the trailer on the slipway with engine running/idling and in neutral gear you can rev the engine, no problem.

Trim the engine up so the prop is half out of the water and in forward gear it will also run to high rev's at WOT and it will kick up a big rooster tail of water. It runs and sounds perfect.

But trim down so the prop and snout are below the water and subsequently there is more resistance on the prop (and engine) and it chokes and stalls as soon as you try to rev it, in fact it wont rev, it just chokes and dies.

Checked and cleaned the carbs, still the same problem.
Fitted brand new stator, still the same problem.

Pistons and bores are mint! the trigger looks a bit worn out tho there is hardly any insulation left on the wires under the fly wheel doh

Sounds like the cranc seals gone bottom of the powerhead, will rev on trailer but as soon as load applied no go

Done a few of these so maybe worth checking

re xr2

have a look at the exhaust chest gasket make sure you are not getting any water in there as the revs build water presure will push water back in to the exhaust chest and kill the engine dodgy dave
