I had wondered what they were. To me, they look like an internal circlip and a washer. Itīs the same on one of the other rams also. No sign of any fluid escape and havenīt tried the rams yet. Is this something bad or just another part of the drive re-build?

the main cause is when the drives are left in the up position for a long period of time in the water
dirty crust builds up on the rams and then when they are put down instead of it being all nice smooth and shiny its like dragging sand paper through the seals.
hopefully someone on here will know but I am sure you cant get seal kits anymore it will be replacement rams.
is there not an oil tank inside the boat near the transom on top of a small motor with a couple of soleniods?
check the condition of the oil in there, should be red not white or pink.

There's a seal kit, part no: 25-87400A2 which is a set of O rings 31.53
or a ram overhaul kit, part no: 87399A2 117.14

Merc trim fluid is red, but you can also use engine oil, which is how all the pump come now. Either is fine, it just shouldn't be emulsified.

Thanks Tony, have sent you a pm. I checked today, am I right to guess that the pictures are the trim pumps? and canīt see the fluid. There is a large Bennet style pump but I think thatīs for the trim tabs.

Thanks all.

They are the trim pumps. Between the two hoses is a plastic filler/dipstick. Be careful unscrewing they tend to stick and the plastic is very weak

Got one of the drives off today, from the knocking engine. Gimble bearing feels secure and smooth. Where is the exhaust flap, that was mentioned as a possible cause of knocking? Will re start tomorrow and see if knock is still there. Attached some more photos, might help to identify these drives.

Do you have can you borrow an alignment bar ? Ocean Marine in Portals used to have 1 as well as Port Fairline. If not then try the Mercruiser dealer on the main poligono.

Thanks for the info Tony.

No, I havenīt got the alignment tool yet, thanks for the pointers though. Need to find the best way to go with this boat. Would like to do the minimal and get her out.

Happy birthday to ME. Fired up starboard engine just now and she is running witout any knock. I guess it must be the gimble bearing. Just out of interest, I will be re painting the entire outdrive, gimble also. Anything I should re new, while doing this?

Second drive off tomorrow, check for noise and then decide what to do with the drives, rebuild or replace. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Peter

Just found out that starting the engines, with the drives trimmed full up, will make a noise similar to what I mentioned. Not sure if itīs the knocking or the rattling noise though. Drive two coming off now, after removing rams and lowering it. Next update in a couple of hours.

Just had confirmation from "Annette Wilkin (annette.wilkin@brunswick.com) on behalf of BME Service (BME.Service@brunswick.com)" Stating "After checking the serial numbers they are all manufactured in 1985. Engines are MCM 260 and drives are Alpha One." Rams are seized solid, pumps were dry. Filled and tried but loosing oil from external joints. Re build kits and new pipes I think. Are there other parts, under the gimble, where the pipes fit into?

Second engine started and drive down, no rattle now. Getting a squeal from the starboard engine water pump. Belt seams tight enough so Iīm guessing the pump needs changing. The Port engine looks like it has a new plate at the rear of the pump and new fittings in the body of the pump, giving me the idea that replacement pump parts fit into the rear of the pump housing, am I right?

So, maybe both engines and drives are ok. What should be replaced, before it goes back in the water. I guess gimble bearings, any seals etc??

Thanks again for all the help

Pete

Yes the UJ's will rattle/knock when tilted up also when a UJ is worn it will make the noise when on full lock (drive down).
sounds like the pump has been overhauled or replaced

Parts suppliers

Anyone know a good parts supplier for these engines and the legs? Thinking of spending the time and money to re fit and clean up whatīs there. Would still consider replacing with diesels and Bravos, or just bravoīs (for the counter rotation), at the end of next season.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks for everything up to now.
