Its 'needle and seat' mate, great news you've found the issue - never heard of one of those backing out - they should be really tight. Perhaps the last person to rebuild got distracted and never finished screwing it in..

Anyway - hope it squeels like a pig with a red hot poker shoved up its ar3e now

Well... Off the trailer it felt great in the marina, loads of low-end grunt, torque and throttle response. As soon as we were out the pierheads I floored it, it bogged really badly, struggled to plane and again only revved up to 4,500. Turned around and straight back in, back on the trailer and to the workshop, the bastard thing had backed out again. When I 'sorted' it this afternoon I only nipped it up lightly as I didn't wanna harm the brass. It's now proper proper tight so we go again tomorrow!!

Nope... it's better but still won't go over 5,300 and bogs down when trying to plane. In the marina it still feels good when stabbing the throttle so I think there's still a fuel starvation issue. Gonna strip all 3 carbs again tomorrow and set the float levels properly, if there was the issue with the needle seat on the middle one then I'm guessing whoever stripped the carbs last time didn't do a great job so they might be well out. I'm learning the hard way!

Did you get someone to pump the primer bulb to see if it made any difference when accelerating? If you've found 800 revs you must have sorted one or some of the problem.

Still reckon you might be down on a pot.. swap the plugs dude..

New plugs will be fitted this weekend. I'm also going to get new HT leads as it may be one breaking down under load? Does anyone have a service manual, going to go right through all the timing and link n sync procedures too to be sure.

That would be good Jim thanks!! I just checked the float levels and they're all bang on level with the gasket face when inverted... Fuel pump is my next target, got new plugs and leads coming, could do with the manual to go through the formal timing and link/sync procedures. Could just be a combination of lots of little problems all adding up to one bag of shit motor!

I see you've been out in lord of the rings, how does it go?

Changed the switchboxes - problem solved! Still gonna reset the timing and do the link n sync to get it bang on, but she's running on 6, revving over 6k (it was a bit bumpy out there so I couldn't go mental and we nearly lost the cowl twice!) and it doesn't bog down out of the hole. Well chuffed
