mercury engines

i think it would help people like myself if there was a list posted on merc outboards, giving details of model name, year introduced, year stopped making, bhp produced and also owners comments on how they rated it.it would be a great reference point for people wanting to buy a new outboard but not sure what to go for.it could start from say mid 80s to present day, also include race outboards like xr2.any photos would be good too!
what do you all think?

The "OB" number stamped on the block under the flywheel is the engine code! The "OB" part i think narrows down the year and model?

I'll check it out tommorrow but it looks like the powerhead has been changed in the past, both numbers should be the same, not an uncommon practice.

I don't like big guns - except as works of engineering excellence.
Big engines are better!

Cheers john....does that mean it is 200hp rating at the prop & not the cylinder head then & am i right in saying it has chrome cylinders....
Are they a good mota & should i keep it...it runs well but seems to smoke a lot & tickover seems erratic...

yeah, 225 crankshaft, 200 prop.

I'm not a OB expert, but yeah, 2.4 litre 'coated' bore, rather than steel/iron liner. pretty good motor, if a little aged now
