Mercury revcounter on my Yamaha?

Hi, i have a 1983 yamaha V4 140hp engine 2 stroke but the revcounter just doesn't seem to work, i have tried a mercury revcounter and seems to work fine but i don't know if it's giving me the right reading!

So my question is: Will a mercury revcounter give me a correct/true reading on my engine that i can rely on?

Thanks in advance
Chris

If its dialed in correctly it would be okay and give you the right readings without any problems
