After owing the suzuki you will hate the XR2 they sound great and are great when they run. But you will spend more time fixing it / having it fixed than on the water IMHO. Thats why all of the ones for sale have just been rebuilt!

I run an XR2 and so far havn't spent a penny on it other than normal servicing, performance is great just remember its very noisey-my kids hate the noise and now won't go on the boat-not a user friendly engine

I ran XR2's for years with very little problems, great engines.
I would suggest that most of the engines advetised as rebuilt are not because they blow up all the time but because most XR2's where used for racing and need a rebuild after 1 or 2 seasons use.

There are plenty of people out there that think they can rebuild race engines but in reality there are only a hand full that can do it properly.

Great engines in my opinion, and very cheap power nowadays.

I think they are great engines too - BUT he wants to use it for recreational fun use, they are not great for water skiing behind, the person in back of the boat gets a lot of engine smell and noise the person being towed feels like fuel is being sprayed in their face! The engine needs rebuilding every year and ... "there are only a hand full that can do it properly".

I think that answers how easy the engines are to run for recreational purposes and to maintain.

Have also ran XR2 and found that they are £ for HP a cheap way of getting their, on the running cost front they are a bit juicy compared to other 200hp although no doubt most 200hp at wide open throttle won't be to dissimilar, it's the low rpm no doubt today's outboards would be considerably better and
on the repair bill side I tended to keep the revs no higher than 5500 leaving 1500 spare, less stress less likely to go bang and it did not, in fact the only trouble I encountered was letting a friend flush one through where he claims it went bang ... mmm Pr**K knew it was a bad idea

The XR2 is an awesome motor.

Like any motor - if you look after it and service it, it will repay you in reliability.

Might be worth checking the compression on it before you buy it..

And if you do buy it, change the impellar and gear box oil and put new plugs etc on it before you go out for the first time
