Mercury XR2 HP ?

Hi, can anyone advise apon the aprox HP of a circa 94' mercury XR2 ?, ours is a uk/europe XR2 not the american black max/XR2.
Im struggling to find any spec or tech info on our XR2, all that keeps cropping up is the american version which looks like our stock black max with a XR2 decal stuck on it.
im guessing ours is a 2litre 150hp but is there any way of knowing?
ours has the one piece cowling,WMH carbs,94' ???

any advise, pointers, ect would be really helpful

Is there a difference between stock American and European XR2's ? Didn't know that, so I'd like to follow this thread.
I believe stock XR2 hp's range from 150, over 175 to 200hp, but don't know how to tell the difference on sight. Those are crankshaft ratings and not propshaft ratings if I'm not mistaken. If we are talking stock motors I'd check the serialnumber and take it from there.

Now, that probably doesn't bring you any news, but there must be people here that surely know alot more on XR2's and can help you to sort out the differences.

Hi, thanks for the info, ours is reving to 6100rpm with a 23p 5 blade prop ( i dont have details of diameter, rake to hand) but is 6100 where we should be? we have tried several props and gained aprox 5mph, our race boat (23ft forgecraft) is excellent in the rough but when its flat our top speed on GPS has been 60.7 mph, if 6100rpm is about right then 60mph is all the old girl will do in the flat.

You want to be seeing at least 6500 or more, 6500 in the rough and 6800ish in the flat, smaller prop (21) with 95/96 xr2s we were pulling 7000 in the flat

Hi, thanks for the info, we have several 21p props 3 and 4 bladers so we will bung them on and see what happens, we didnt test it with 21p props before because my rib runs a 21 and it will only do about 50mph with a 200hp yamaha at 5000rpm but i guess the XR2 will be reving 1500rpm more than my yam so thanks for the advise,we'll try the 21p Pro V prop then the 21p 4 blader .
many thanks,nick.

From what I gather, there are at least 3 types of xr2.

150 black max 2.0 xr2 (not a mercury racing motor - late 80s)
150 xr2 2.0 race motor (sleeved down 2.4 block? - late 80s to early/mid 90s) this is the one with the bucket cowl with 2 air inlet vents per side
200 xr2 2.0 race motor (sleeved down 2.5 block, mid 90s on). 200 at the prop shaft according to merc and good for 7k. This was the 3 vent bucket cowl similar to 260/280 efi. Late models were alien.

On more than 1 occasion I have heard the race motors lovingly referred to as hand grenades. I personally loved mine but made sure it was well maintained and oiled at 32:1 with merc high perf blend oil.

I'm sure others who are real experts can add / refine. By the sounds of things, the one being discussed here is the 150 race version https://www.mercruiserparts.com/sele...c_nbr=MERC+XR2

i thought there were 3 offshore types.

2.0 150 from 80's early 90's
2.0 175 from early 90's
2.0 200 from mid 90's to early 00's

thanks for your input, ours appears to be the 2.0 150hp bucket cowl with 2 vents per side although these 'vents' are just recesses with decals and nowhere for air to pass through. Im interested in the fact you ran yours at 32:1, we have been running ours at 50:1 with quality oil and so far so good but again its not easy to get info, trial and error is usually expensive with outboards! over the years 50:1 is what ive used in all my mercs, johnsons and older yamahas (100:1 later models),was your XR2 as old as ours? (1990) im just thinking 32:1 may be too lean for our old girl?

Hi see here http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread....ght=XR2+manual

I assume this is the manual for your motor. Specifies 32:1 and merc high perf blend oil. Hard to get hold of now and pricey stuff but hey ho

merc racing Spec

As you can see on this original document from mercury racing, it's very strange to have 194 Kw at prop shaft on a 180HP engine! Especialy if you are under ICOMIA 28-83 rules for power mesurement.
I think this line is not correct...
