offshore exhaust housing?

Why do people cut the end of there offshore exhaust housings off so they point straight out the back rather than point down? Are there performance gains from this? if so wot? accelaration, response??

Maybe so its above the water line. This would, I guess, give a better take off, because the engine wouldn't have to push all the water out of the exhaust housing.
