Omc/mercruiser 7.4

I'm potentially getting a boat that has a 7.4 king cobra lump and drive in it. Anybody had one of these? Anything to look out for? Also, is the prop fitting the same as the mercruiser as I want to try props we already have.

Many thanks. Stef.

Hi

If it's "King Cobra" then it should have a cone clutch...that’s a good thing as the early "Cobra" drive was a dog "clunker" clutch. The King Cobra is essentially the forerunner to the Volvo Penta SX drive.

As for the V8 well it’s your standard 454 Big block Chevy, probably a 330hp. Like all V8s they do burn a lot of juice when used enthusiastically but I'd have em over an old fella diesel any day

What sort/size of boat? If it’s small and you cruise at 30knots at 3000rpm it'll be cheap to run but if it’s big and heavy and you have to run at 4,000rpm to get 30knots it won’t be

Keep smilin

It's in a 23' boat so should be ok. Says 375 hp but that'll be crank not at the prop. Have read up about the other clutch system. This has the cone clutch. It's the king cobra spitfire if that makes any difference? The main thing I'm concerned about is props. Seems you need to have something machined to fit merc props???

As for fuel, I'm always gently bently! Lol

Thanks for your ideas/thoughts. Cheers
