P18 Sound System

Anyone any experience of installing sound systems in small boats such as a Phantom 18?
I know how I'm mounting it and what speakers but wondered if there were any common problems I should try and avoid?
Also has anyone got any idea of what power should be sufficient?
The speakers will be 550w 6x9's to start with and I reckon a 4 channel amp with 100w RMS per channel will be plenty with speakers mounted in the front of the boat.
Anyone any other ideas?
Cheers, Max

Make sure you coat all connections with liquid neoprene otherwise there'll rot in nano-seconds!

I used to do this kind of thing for a living with cars and other vehicles, and my idea was to fit the speakers and amp only, ie: no head unit.

Then I would just have a covered 3.5mm jack socket under the dash (to keep water out) so you can plug an Ipod or similar into it along with an LED illuminated toggle switch for the amp power. The track selection, volume, etc. can all be controlled from the MP3 player.

Fewer holes to cut, Lower drain on the batteries, less to rot out and go wrong - and no tempting thieves by having visible expensive audio lying about in an open boat when it's parked on the trailer!

I would have thought if you were using a fairly powerful amp then it'd be a good idea to fit two batteries and a split charging/battery isolator module. Otherwise you run the risk of not being able to restart the engine after a long period of loud use.

The 3 cyl motors in OCR sound OK with a drilled exhaust.
Or you could pop the xr2 I've got in Tony's garage onto it.

Use marine grade cable, glue heatshrink connectors and have a look at Marine AV's site for the Amps that won't rot in one season! They also do all of the connectors and a waterproof Ipod case to plug into it!

Max all i done for Mutz Nuts is put some waterproof speakers on the kickboard then mounted an amp to the back of it in a box,
then buy a rca/phono to 3.5 jack and plugged it into the amp and ipod
run a switch to the dash,
peice of piss!

as for your 6x9's, ignor the max wattage-tis bollocks...whats the rms,
also why you going for 4 ch? other wise u have to split the double rca to give all 4 channals signal, which means it will be quieter.

what ohms is the amp when putting out 4x100 rms?
bit ott for 6x9's...
