Phantom 16 max engine size

Hi, New to the forum.

Hopefully about to close a deal on a Phantom 16 hull, need to source myself an engine. Was just wondering what the maximum specified engine size was for them? and what would be the largest engine size recomended over the specified limit?

Have been look at Yamaha 90's but i would like the boat to have some chance of keeping up with my friends P18 with 175 yamaha. How tuneable are these motors? I would ideally like the boat to hit around 60 mph. I think a 130 V4 would be up to the job but id like the boat to have good manners.

Yam 130 is perfect don't go bigger we've done it (xr2) fast but to big for the boat, the 130 with the right prop (24 lazer) should give you over 60 mph no problem

In my opinion, the best combination of all time is a p16 with a 90. Safe and dependable. My over boat done 60 on a perfect day but that was a stripped out ocr boat.

A 130 would be nice but they are quite hard to come by here in Jersey. Yam 90's are a bit more common.

How easy is it to get more power out of a Yam 90? ive seen Hydro Tec do a phase kit for them which gives 10-25hp? (slightly vague on actual power increase) Is it possible to port the cylinders slighty on them or are the exhaust ports inaccessible? Dont want to over stress it to much but some mild tuning would be nice to bring it upto 100-110hp.

I ran an etec 90 on mine and it did about 55mph on the sea, I still have that prop if your interested.

There are a few engines in Guernsey for sale you can follow the Guernsey powerboat association on Facebook and website which also happens to have details of all our races!Next one is in two weeks time

I wouldn't go any bigger than the 90, I use to have to put weight in the front of mine and move the fuel tank forward if it was anything over a f4. I have a few good props for those. I established the speed records at coniston a few years ago in mine, 1 still stands. I believe Sam Whittle beat one last year.

It was a very clean boat when I sold it, bit of a mission to go and get it from Scotland but had to be one of the nicest ones out there.

E class OCR 115 Suzuki back in the day which you could port to 140 and go slower if you really wanted. Just saying.

I had a mercury 135hp it was brilliant fun!!! Solid fast newer put a foot wrong! I raced it a few times two!!! Go bigger.....

Back in the late 80's just before OCR A class went to XR2's, the boat/ engine combination that was winning was the P16 with a 115 straight 6 Mercury. Some were also running the 130/140 Yamaha's. If i remember correctly the prop to run was a 26" Yamaha Competition and they were hitting around 70mph.

I had a Evinrude 140hp on my Ring 16ft. Did 66mph with a raker 24. A handfull to drive and could have gone quicker with other prop. Real fun boat ! But 140hp felt as a max to keep things safe.

We have run a Mariner 75, 115 Tower of Power, Suzuki 100 v4 and currently have a Tohatsu 140. Its fastest with the 140 was the most fun with the tower of power! Felt like a F1 Car!

We raced a 16 with 90 yam, 90 Tohatsu,130 yam and 140 Tohatsu. Tohatsu fastest - 67mph, but 90 Yam was the best balanced.
We have a 90 and 130 yam, and 90 Tohatsu in the garage if you need one, or a mint fully blueprinted late 90 yam - very quick.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think a 90 would have been the best suited engine for the boat but i have been offered and very cheap Yam 115 with a cracked gearcase. I figured rather than risk spending 1000-1500 on a decent used engine that could possibly go wrong further down the line i could spend 800-1000 on this doing a full rebuild and end up with a better motor in the end.

Does anyone know of a complete V4 lower unit or a decent gearcase?

Going to get a tuner and have the heads skimmed for it eventually, does anyone know how much you can safely skim off the heads?

There are a few Phantoms/Rings still going over here. Nice ring 20 with 200hp XR2 for sale over here atm, pretty spotless boat.

I part own a P18 with a 175 Yam on it with a mate but he is buying me out and im going to build my own boat. More for fun than racing, but could possibly be interested in a bit of racing a bit further down the line.

I had the same set-up, never noticed what the speed was, to busy with the helm, great fun, if you can get one it'll do nicely when you move up to an 18.
