Phantom 28 - crackerbox

Hi All,

New to the forum but not new to boating or the sport.

I purchased the Phantom 28 Crackerbox from Mike at Lancing Marine. I recently started to think about what to do with her, she hadn’t seen water for circa 10 yrs I believe. I was going to put her in as she stands for the end of this year and get a feel for her. But sadly the sealer around all the transom fittings has perished with age and its and engine and drive out job to sort. This doesn’t phase me as I have boating background, but I wondering now if I’m going to this effort do I put the old 6 cylinder Ford and LM surface drive back in or repower to the LM surface drive or swap to an outdrive.

Currently I believe she runs around 40+ knots with a 345hp tweaked Ford and LM drive. This seems a little slow for the phantom hull, I’m wondering how efficient to set up is? I have an option on a pair of low hours Yanmar 370hp 8LVs and drives.. I think two might be make her a little stern heavy at 435kg each plus 112kg shield and drive.

I’m not looking for an out and out racing boat but plus 50knots would be my ideal aim to allow cruising at 40.

I believe there is only one others twin inboard diesel phantom 28, from the limited info I can find she runs 60+? with a pair of hammerhead V8s but can’t find a total weight or power of the package.

Mike has been fantastic and is a total wealth of knowledge about the Phantoms, it pains me to change up a totally original boat for marginal gains. But If I can turn her into something that pays homage to the original with a modern heart or hearts then I’m all ears.

Thank in advance
Josh

Leviathan seemed to sit low aft. I am sure you may find some old comments on here from mr fuller about weight balance.

Good luck with your venture. I’d love twin engines just for marina manoeuvring, although heaps of other reasons too.
