As BluFin has sadly already pointed out, ‘Pteropus’, with the able Fox boys on board did not win the 1982 3c World crown. The honours that year went to Luigi Radice in a Buzi Cat.
If memory serves –
The Foxes would have won had they not failed post race scrutineering, something to do with gearbox ratios.
They were honest boys and were seriously P***ed with a certain supplier of Merc parts who assured them that it had been homologated. I think legal proceedings followed…
As Blufin pointed out Mike was in the RAF, an officer in the Queens Flight, who even piloted Charles and Di to their honeymoon destination!
The boys spent truckloads in 81 and 82 and I think the above incident somewhat dulled their taste for offshore.

They got the name after racing their first P21 (ex Bruce Nash’s London and Manchester) at Fowey in 81. Spent so much time in the air they eventually came down and split the Phantom in half! Mr Baker got a call on the Tuesday (Bank holiday weekend) and was instructed to build them a new one!

more 82 trivia

As Blufin said Ian Bernie in a P25 won the 82 worlds. What has been forgotten is that there was a very nasty incident in the 2nd heat.
Pete Bloomfield and Neil Holmes (phantom evolution) were racing in 3c in a Stapley Cat. Bloomers decided it was time to roll the boat over, what he didn’t count on was Avia Watches (Bernie) being in the way!
The QSS prop of Heynes for Toyota (Bloomfield & Holmes) was spinning @ 6000 + and taking bits out of the P25 deck!

Is that the same Haynes that went on to sponsor Dick Strutton in his class II Tigershark 32, and then his class 1, Cougar US1-46 'Reg Haynes & son' (Toyota dealer)
