Phantom records

Hi everyone, I recently bought the p21 formally named here on business, it needs a few gel repairs and sutch, does anyone no if the original phantom build records still exist and if so is it possible to get access to them so as I can find colour codes for the boat, any help would be much appreciated, cheers.

Steve has long retired, along with all the records.

Any halfway decent repairer should be able to do an adequate colour match.

I do have the original documents from Steve Baker, including laminate schedules and general instructions on the construction of the Phantom.

In the general notes from Steve it mentions the following, hopefully this can steer you in the right direction of Llewellyn Ryland pigments:

Gel Coats
Gel coats used included Scott-Bader 33pa, Eroresins ’Neogel 2000‘, and specialist mould gels. Spray gels were considered unsuitable because of the open nature of the workshop.

Pigments
In addition to the conventional pigments, high quality ‘organic’ pigments were preferred if superior colour-fastness required. Particularly with reds, oranges and yellows.
Almost exclusively Llewellyn Ryland pigments were used.

Catalysts
Two types of catalyst were used, standard MEKP ( M50 ), and a ‘Low-Reactivity’ catalyst.
The latter giving more control of gel time whilst allowing sufficient catalyst addition for proper cure.

Thanks for replying, I have colour cards from various pigment suppliers which were common at the time and it would seem one of the colours on the boat is a Scott Bader colour, the other however is nothing like any colour from leweland ryland, Scott Bader, jotun or even no Ral coulours are close so it seems it could have just been a custom colour, I'm not sure this is something phantom would of done?
Tom as you have the records do you have info on specific boats? Any further information or history of my boat would be greatly appreciated, cheers again

It's completely irrelevant what colour the boat was when built. Even if you had the leftover pot used to build the boat it wouldn't match, due to fading etc.
Best just get the closest colour off a RAL chart and the closest darker and closest lighter and start mixing..
Tip, sand and area with 1200 an buff to get rid of the surface discolouration. Your match will be much closer. And don't try match in direct sunlight..

Hi Hydrostream, I realise new pigment won't match perfectly due to the age of the boat and fading, weathering etc, I do however thing it's easier and far less time consuming to try and get the correct pigments and tweak them slightly to match rather then trying to mix something up from scratch or from other blues, I've got faith in the bloke doing the gel work so I'm trying to provide him with what he's asked for, cheers for your help.

Cool. Get a ral chart and get the best match you can. It'll be as close if not closer than the blue on your boat. Base resins and pigments have changed over the years. Unless your boat is under 5 years old you're wasting your time with original colour codes..
Or you could get a spectrometer match done.. but that rarely matches either..

The information I have is lamination schedules and build instructions plus various notes and drawings, nothing on a specific named craft other than 28+. Apologies. Alan Powers guidance though is defiantly sound.
