Pimp My Ring! (Ooh-err, etc)

Well, after window shopping for over a year on and off, I've FINALLY bought my first boat!

Early 90's Ring 18, Mercury 200 Black Max. Just what I needed. Here's where I need a few hints and tip from you guys though:

1: Cowl. I was going to order an Alien cowl from Gav (and probably will at some point when my bank balance recovers) but for now I thought I'd repaint the old one as it's very good condition and uncracked, then fit some of the current-style 'Mercury' graphics. The cowl has already had the original graphics stripped and been repainted, but another coat and some plastic filler in the scratches wouldn't hurt.
Anyone on here do those graphics? Gav, for example?

2: Outboard hoses/wiringlooms: These are a mess, so I planned to obtain a couple of those flexible hoses that run between the splashwell and the powerhead and neatly house all the stringy bits. Are they available as a retro-fit kit to replace the witches hats that are on there now? And if they are, who sells them?

3: Rev counter: I'm planning on pulling out all the old instruments (most of which don't work anymore anyway) and replace them with newer better kit and a switch panel for all the odds and sods like bilge pump, nav lights, etc. I spent ten years as an auto-electrician, so installing this kit doesn't bother me in the least. GPS I already have, VHF/DSC I'll have before long, so that just leaves a rev counter. Anyone know the best one to use for one of these? I'm guessing I won't have a lot of choice other than Mercury, but maybe you guys know different.

And that's about it! I'll post pics when I have some if anyone's interested. Looking forward to finally joining in rather than watching from the sidelines.

How do the standard tachos work then chaps? Impulse off one of the HT leads or the low voltage primary side of one coil I'm guessing?

I think if your gunna fit rex bezzels etc then the proper stuff stems from rex marine but you can get a very simular product (or at least I can from Marine biazzare - Plymouth)which isnt exspensive. Remove the witches tit and leave the hose long, then you could get away without hose bezels etc etc.

Sorry to sound like a dumbass, but this is my first ever boat, and I freely admit to knowing absolutely nothing about working on them.
What I meant was, is there a take-off point already fitted from the factory, or do you piggy-back a wire off the existing system? Clearly there is a fitting already there for one, so that's good.

I'll try not to ask daft questions in future. Would't want you blokes to wear out your 'wanker' emoticons!

That was not amied at yourself, its an 'in joke' and I am sure Matt will fill you in with a trip down memory lane

You can buy a new loom off ebay.COM and import it for about £80 all in. But it will show you what wires what but its pretty easy really.

Ha ha! I'm sure it wasn't posted with any malicious intent Rob, not a problem mate!

Not sure what I'll do as regards clocks, etc yet, but yours seem cheap. To be honest, I really don't thik I'll need much more than RPM, volts/amps (or just a charging warning light) and maybe engine temperature (so I get a bit of warning if the intake holes get clogged!)

Any thoughts on anything I've overlooked?

Engine hoses? I'm still looking. Think I'll call Marine Bazaar and see what they can do. Sinkunit: Thanks for the offer dude, but my boat is blue and white, so red may look a little odd!

Cheers to everyone for their thoughts! Much appreciated.

Water pressure gauge is what you want for checking any problem with your water intake. Over heating can be caused by more than just clogged intake holes. Your dash wont look right without a speedo.

Any pics of your boat?

Sure! I'll try and figure out how to post images on here tonight.

Worst comes to the worst, I'll just upload them to my Photobucket account and post a linky.

They take their signal from an 'AC tap' off the 12 pole alternator beneath the flywheel. (grey wire in loom for signal)

I suggest you add the other steering cable ASAP and make sure the mounts and bushes are sound. This will make a world of a difference to the handling. I had a Ring 18 for years with an Evinrude 235 - they're great boats and come up smiling when you do all sorts of daft things. Enjoy it!

Thanks for all your help guys. Much appreciated, as always.

gar163y:

As far as I could tell, all the mounts and bushes are pretty solid. It was serviced and checked over by a local dealer last month, when they changed the oil in the gearbox, replaced plugs, ignition lead set, and a sticking starter solenoid. The current owner put a brand new control box on this summer, as well as retrimming the interior. He also fitted a new set of solenoids for the engine lift. It started fine, no excessive smoke after initial fire-up, and seemed to blow water out of the pee hole well enough, so that looks promising.
The sevicing dealer has also attested to the fact that all cylinders have equal compression of just over 100psi.
I'm not sure what the cylinder compression should be, but my experience of two-stroke bike engines has always taught me that the main thing is to have all cylinders equal rather than worrying too much about pressures if they're within range.
I'm not going to be tweaking it as I think it'll be plenty fast enough for me as it is!

Bit puzzled about steering comment though. Extra cable? It's got a Teleflex type system with the gearbox on the back of the column driving a meaty looking cable back to the ram on the outboard mount. I know it would have had cable and pulley originally, because there's a blank over the hole where the port side cable would have exited the splashwell, and it may even still have the pulleys inside the hull, but surely there isn't one missing now?
If there is I'll be a bit surprised, as the steering was lovely and smooth lock-to-lock, but then you guys know more than me. A lot more than me!

Johnny Rocket:
Thanks for the image help. You're a star!

BluFin:

I'll check out the diagrams for sure. I'll also be adding an extra kill cord on the dash, as the standard one is now stuck down beside the seat and a bit inaccesible.

Looking forward to the springtime when it's all tidied up!
