Quality audio phono cables
I need to get 2x5m (double)RCA cables for the boot build in my car,
The speakers hiss and wine with the alternator, I've fitted a condenser but no luck with that,
I think its where the audio cables run with some power leads, so im going to need some shielded ones,
want to get a pair for around 20-25 quid,
wheres the best place to go?
Whats the benefits of "directional" cables?
Cheers guys

I've always found maplin stock adequate leads - can't remember which range though, might be the "Pure Connectivity" range, (the basic range is cheap and cheerful, nothing more).

I've never found that sheilded has made much of a difference. Your best bet by far is to get the power and phono cables running up opposite sides of the car. Check for good earths too, i have no idea why that can cause a whine but i've seen it happen! Best bit about both ideas is they're free!

the power cables run down the center of the car and the rca's down the left hand side, i mean the other wires for rear lights etc
All my speakers are running off seperate amps, so any tiny his is amplified big time and sounds shit!
its got a 2 awg wire from battery to ground, and 4 awg to each power cap, and 2 more earthing points in the back for the 4 amps, all the amps are wired in a ring aswell
its Ross by the way,(puppiesballs)

If you audio cables are well away from your main power cables I doubt its any other power wires. Its more than likely how your stereo is wired.

as all the speakers are running off amps, even the most minute bit of interference is amplified,
few pics of the car + boot build

sounds stupid but alot of british cars have noise that can be greatly reduced by earthing the bonnet!!!! and no i aint kiddin! Id always recomend good quality rca leads, check all your audio connections and earths. Beef up the main battery and alternator earth with an additional lead if need be and check all other main earth points!
Most "cheap" amps are suseptable to noise but i think thats kenwoods in ur boot which are average and should behave!!
Cable runs are important, typically power goes down the noisy side of the car ie the side with all the loom.... rca go down opposite side and if possible all speaker cables run with rca or even better down centre!!! obviously this varies with the car!!
Whats your head unit?? what voltage pre outs does it have?? If your using line convertors (speaker to rca) then id bin it now, especially if your system is fully active as your indicating!!
Id also google speaker noise on your make and model of car cause some cars are just sh*t at producing it!! may be a common fix!!!!

Beef up battery an alternator!
ermm standard 70A alternator is now a 120a alternator,
its also got an extra 4 awg wire running to it to cope with the extra current.
battery, just about as big as it can get, had to cut the side off the battery tray, and thers about 3mm between the fan and the battery, also not much clearance for the bonnet! see pic, not very clear, but its a heavy duty battery, that just about 2 times the size of the standard one.
the kenwood amps are 400 quid each(rrp) so shouldnt be causing it,
headunit is a dvd jobby with i think 2.5 or 4v preouts,
wired, front channel does components, rear does sub amps, (makes it easy to adjust bass with Fade function)
no inline converters here
its got chopper components 225rms(running at 150 rms at the moment as ive just managed to blow 1 of my fkkin amps so all the speakers are running off the 1 ps621 amp,
theres one on ebay for just under 300 quid though.
ive run the power leads down the middle, and the rca's down the left with the car loom the left pass's all the fuse box and shit loads more wires,
Cheers for the help mate

just curious how did you fix the thump?
I'm going to try and run a RCA straight from head unit to amp just over the seats hopefully that will stop the interference if not i will have to look else where

i had two problems! the bass starved my screen of juice and cd player would fade or skip (no power cap in back) and thumping when turning on and off.
a small cap was fitted to supply constant 12v on head unit to fix that, then i just fitted a relay to the remote signal from head unit to amps..... this just delays the startup enough to supress the thump... if it thumps on way off then fit a diode across coil of relay and it will eliminate the emf generated by a relay(always good sense when a relay is connected to any form of pcb or semi conductor device anway).
