R21 Hamilton Jet
Just wondering if anyone has experimented with different drive options on an R21?
Supposing you had a spare 5 ltr V8 and gearbox, a minto hamilton jet drive and an R21 hull. What would you do??
Would an attempt to mix the 3 together be a complete waste of time from the start??
Has anything like this been done?
Cheers for any advice (or laughs)

No no. when butchers cut things up, they can still sell them on!
Any recomendations on a hull that would like this kind of drive?
I've seen a small fonda (i think) with a rover v8 jet drive on youtube... does it not look/sound fun??

If you wanna put a jet drive in any boat its gonna need to have a pretty flat bottom to install the water intake and to work efficienty.
Even if you put a small block v8 and outdrive unit in a R21 your be lucky to hit 60mph.
If you want the sound of a v8 youll need to buy a boat that came out the factory that way. If you want a boat with a jet drive buy a seadoo.

Define a shallow vee...
We run a variable deadrise starting with 19* at the transom. It is important to get the lead in correct.
What model drive is it?
You won't need the gearbox, but what motor do you have and how much power is available?
Most Hamilton Jets will top out at around 65-70mph, unless you have an RX model.
If you want a purpose built hull for the jet I can always sent you one...

I puta 16 Fonda together with a PP Jet and a Ford V6 in the early eighties, it wasn't a great success! Good fun though, and stopped ever so quick, just didn't go very fast, perhaps 40-45 mph at best.

Bike engined Boats
On similar thoughts to this as nearly all car motor sport seam to use Bike engines to get a fantastic Power to weight ratio has anyone used a bike engine in a boat,I've seen a Hyabusa engined boat on U tube which sounded fantastic but not sure how it went,I know racing wise gearboxes would be an issue but it could be an interesting project-light weight 180 BHP from 1300cc in standard form, close ratio gearbox and 15,000 reliable revs with a wide power band, could have a sealed fresh water cooling(tiny Rad)using a jet drive would give you an easy reverse solution and the 6 speed gearbox might give you good acceleration and top speed. You can tel I'm bored at work hence this post-Nic

A lack of torque is the biggest problem with small capacity motors

I'd love to build a Busa powered 3B boat. wouldn't use a jet though, would build a wee custom surface drive. (though not of course a Bananashark one)
Homologation is the issue.

the u tube vids (there's several) shows the Hyabusa boat with a surface drive, looks and sounds great-masive rooster, but it looks like no reverse, would the fact of having five or six gears not overcome the lack of torque,I know it would sound strange hearing a boat change gear but would be a novelty? If my XR2 ever blows it might be a thought, could even put two bike engines they weigh nothing

I don't think it would lack torque.
A B23 Busa would be a larf. And i'm sure getting round the reverse rule wouldn't be a problem.

Yeh. With the busa being popular in the 7 type replicas these days, there are a few gearboxes designed to provide reverse for the cars - remember a few articles about when they first started doing it.
Not sure on the config though - think they tend to keep the mcycle gearbox, which outputs into the reversing box, then driveshaft. So 6 forward & 6 reverse gears - or on yer boat, you can choose the prop direction to suite the course direction.

Things are surprisingly good actually.
I'm getting plenty of proper work and I've found a very interesting and convenient location for a new skool.
All i need now is a bit on the side and the top end of my hearing back.
Hope things are well for you too!

Yeh? And if you know who finds out, you'll soon be hearing a bit of sibilance.
