Racing and wakes

So, potentially stupid noobie question. Apologies

I have watched P1, Honda and Class1 racing...regardless of the weather the drivers appear desperate to avoid running in eachother's wakes.

I assume there is something about aerated water being inefficient...but running in someone else's wake appears less choppy so surely there's an efficiency gain there?

I can see in Class1 that the "rooster tail" and the spray are a problem if you're directly behind...but less so in P1 and much less so in Honda racing.

I'm a "fast" cruiser, not a racer....but interested to know the logic behind it.

you cant read the water very well either at race speeds, following a cruiser at cruising speed does flatten the water nicely though

apologies for butting in

when i raced offshore class 3 i used to find that upon coming up on a slower boat i benifitted by creeping up slightly to one side of his main prop wash just inside his wake ie clear water and then at the last minute skip his wake and make the pass then weave slightly once in front so he couldnt benifit fom me as we was all on the same heading it used to be quite fun in a close race i actually felt i gained a little speed just beforehand and had the visual of his boat actions to watch for rogue water /waves etc all presuming he knew where he was going !
