Ring 18/225 opti

hi all, advise please, i have just bought a ring 18, this boat is like new and when i say new i mean brand new, not a single stress crack anywhere, fully original gel and had been stored for 12 years in a barn. My dilema is i have been offerd a 2005 225 optimax is this engine too big for the boat. should i be looking for somthing smaller ie a 150/175. I would like to see speeds of around 60mph out of the boat. any advice is much appreciated, thanks Rob

I'd second that, if the opti is at a good price i'd buy it just to resell personally!
Frommy experience with my R16 they don't seem to like being overpowered, it chinewalked like mad!
That said i did see a R18 with a 225 offshore (a 2001 motor) that seemed to handle it well, wot up to the 70's but was rather skittish!

I've had a R18 with a 200 which was fine. Very stable and an easy drive.

That said, the 200 was a 2.4 and would have thought it would have been a lot lighter than a 225opti.

Im pretty sure that the 18 has a max HP rating of 200 but, well im sure Mike will be able to elucidate if he picks up on this thread.

Great boats anyway

well i don't know a lot. But i have a r16 with a 2.5 200 with a few things done to it,more like an xr2, just to make it go a little faster(you can never go fast enough) and was very twichy untill i put t tabs on her, fine now going past the 70 mark. But be for the 200 i had a 150 and boat went fine but to slow for me!

I have just sold my R18.
I had a Merc 260 on the back of it and it ran very nicely. Comparable top end to Airtours which ran 75 ish at records week the other year.
Handles very well after a lot of work on the set up. No trim tabs, no bow tank. Cable steering, kept it a bit tighter.
It did chine walk until we lifted the motor higher. Bullet was almost in line with the vee.

IMHO a 225 will be spot on for you. Just spend a bit of time balancing the boat, get the weights (battery etc) well set out and you'll have cracked it.

surely the 225opti would be a lot heavier than a 260 2.5 though??

I did offset it by an inch. I'm a little bit hazey as it was a few years back but i'm sure we set it to the right.
I also had a 4 inch jack plate on too.

A couple of pictures of it racing. Not got any in detail of the set up unfortunately.
I'll take some of the Phantom if it will help anyone, almost the same set up.
There are a few other pictures in that gallery too. It was a good race boat, just a bit too heavy for the circuit so i changed to the Phantom which gets up and out of the corners quicker.

Larby,
225 is heavier but i think they produce quite a lot of torque compared to the race motors so it wouldn't make it pick up any slower.
Top end might be lower but a play with props should get it going pretty well.

I was just meaning in terms of more weight up high affecting stability really...
That said you know several thousand times more about setups (particularly on R18's) than i do so i'm gonna take you word for it!!

I had a 200 opti on my ring 21.the 30L block has loads of torque, the acceleration was spot on,but it was heavy though.about 227kg

it did suffer from prop torque bad with that engain.

Good luck with that m8.
