Ring 18 / XR2 Holeshot

Hi all,

I would like to draw on everyones knowledge and experience with respect to the holeshot on my Ring 18 as it really gets bogged down until the revs get up. Top end and stability is good.

Set up as follows

Ring 18 (non stepped transom)
Standard XR2 with 20" leg
Laser II prop 21
Manual jack plate 5" set back running 2" below the V
Engine offset 2" to right

The boat is an x ocr rig and was set up like this when I boaght it. I need to ski with it and I don't think that it would pull the skin from a rice pudding let alone get me out of the water.

All suggestions are welcome

Ditch the Laser prop and get a Trophy or Chopper/ET, or try removing the plugs on the prop to let it spin up quicker.

Small hub prop

As Wacky said try changing the prop.

I have never found a large hub lazer to work well for holeshot.

Put a small hub prop on like a chopper or ET or a small hub Laser say a 22" and have it worked to suit the boat.

It just so appens that I have one going spare. I think I got it off of Roofer a couple of years ago but never used it as I changed boats. It's in good condition and has been worked. (thinned and balanced I think)

24" Chopper

I still have for sale a good condition, mirror polished 24" chopper that I can bring to the WSM national for you to try.

Thanks again for help and coments, I am keen to not go down the chopper route as I always found them fast but a bit harsh, the top end isn't the be all and end all as I would like to have fun with the kids now.

I have now also discovered that the lower unit is 1:2 ratio so the prop that I have been using is probably just too big.

small hub Laser sourced.

Cheers
Marcus

2:1

Marcus 2:1!!!

No if you have a 2:1 ratio you would need a taller prop than a 21" so I don't think it is that, I have my 22" lazer here if you wish to try it!

Let me know if you want to pop across.

Cheers
Cye

I'm one of the few on here that use my boat for leisure skiing,Phantom 20 XR2 and found the 21p high five gives very good holeshot and probable 50 mph top end,had it in some rough water last weekend and it handles that very well, previosly had a 23p Lazer 2 but this gave excesive cavitation and chine walk.this might have been due to set up but the high five seems to have curred all of this-good luck
