Ring driving tips?

Hi All,

I've just got myself a Ring 21 and she should be ready to get out this week - she's an 86 ring called "Adrenalin" - the one with a sundeck (gone to be replaced with something lighter) and gill bracket - and she'll have a 200 HO on the back. Fingers crossed I'll have everything sorted on her in time for the last two races of the GPA Basic Race Series.

I've had a phantom 20 since last year and having done a few races in her I felt like I was starting to get a feel for driving her fast / taking corners reasonably quickly.

I was wondering whether anyone out there has any tips on getting the best out of these hulls/ info on cornering/ anything that might be useful to me - I haven't got much time to test her before the next race so any info which might be useful to bear in mind would be very much appreciated!

Chatting to guys over here I've heard that when you trim them out there's a stage that they'll chine but if you keep trimming out you can get through this? Sounds interesting!

Also that they corner very differently to phantom's - carving more than sliding.

I've also heard that they can be in need of some ballast up front in the rough- I have a bow tank from my old boat but doubt I'll get it fitted this year so was planning on playing with some sandbags.

I do realise that none of this is any substitute for time at the wheel but thought I'd ask anyway!

Hopefully this won't deteriorate into the inevitable phantom vs. ring argument!

Cheers All!

John

When they chine you trim it in not out mate

Dan and foxy are racing identical hulls to yours, have a chat with them

Cheers Jacques!!

I'm generally alright with the pinning it bit!

Tony was saying that if you trim rings out through the initial chining bit and they flatten out again? Given that it sounds a bit crazy it's not something I'll test out till after the race anyway!

My plan is just to get out testing and find a good stable trim setting for the race and apart from trimming it in on the corners to leave it at that.

I was really happy with how the phantom felt so am a bit nervous of how different she's going to be! Back to basics unfortunately!

BTW I've sold Nosferatu mate- the guy next door to me is taking her on as a project- him and his dad are pretty handy at fibreglassing and are planning on getting her ready for next season - the nice thing is I still get to see her every day!!

took mine out today, iv moved the fuel tank forward right behind the front seats an jacked the motor all the way up jumpes straight onto the plane and runs really nice an level with no sand in the bow got this week 2 test, then off to amsterdam 4 a week, come back the day before the race. lol

Hi Martin - great news mate! I haven't even seen where Sparky's put the motor yet but with the gill bracket hopefully I should be able to jack it up with no issues and triple bolt it too!!

The seats were from here - they're autostyle seats - not sure of the exact model but this looks very similar

http://www.motorspeed.com/store_main...roduct_id=3610

To be honest mate the seats aren't great - but they were the cheapest I could find - £210 delivered for the pair - the foam in the nether regions of Matt's seat pushed through in our first race and we had to retire as he ended up getting very friendly with the metal subframe! i think he secretly liked it but anyway!

You've probably seen them/ ripped it out of me about them! - but I've got garden patio seats cushions in there now too and they are super comfy although they do look a bit silly. That said - I would absolutely get another pair and do the same if I needed new seats. The important thing for me was getting high backs after Kevin took a wave in the face last year.

Hope the testing goes well - I think we'll be out either wednesday or thursday for a first go!

Cheers mate

John

Still got Herm race footage of Sony that I have put onto DVD, let me know if you want a copy Jon.

Always ran with a Laser, until he spun the bush so I beat him in Herm.
Come to think of it that was the only time I did, it was quick with the 2.4

Hope all goes well

I'm told that "If in doubt, trim out" works pretty well!

Hi Steve,

Just wondering if you have any footage of my dad racing either Soaring Peace or Friendship as the only thing I have is a few photos of when he use to race. I did try and find one of his old boats to fix up and put back to how he had it but I had no luck, plus im guessing by now they will be in a bit of a mess.

Cheers

Hi Jack,

I will hunt through my video collection, must be something in there but film/picture quality was not the best then.
